A very large manatee was spotted near the Fort Panic access yesterday. It seemed to be very curious to all the people as it was within about 100 yards from the beach and went right up to a group of people like it wanted to play or something.

My tenant told me yesterday they were sure they saw a manatee in the Gulf near the South Wall Street access. (I think it was late last week). I was skeptical, but after reading this, I think it could be true.
I haven't seen them this far north before, only in central Florida and then, only in fresh water (Blue Springs near Deland)

This is an amazing site to see! We saw one actually approach the beach when we were at One Seagrove Place about 4 years ago. Some guys touched it and played around with it for awhile. The next day my husband was out in his kayak and it came up out of the water behind him. It made a loud, exhaling sound and scared the heck out of him. We've had many a laugh about that.

I must be blessed...this past saturday i was with some out of town friends at Silver Beach Towers in Destin, the beach was packed, with what have must have been thousands in the water in that stretch of beach and nonetheless 4 huge manatees swam right through the middle of everyone in the water! My second sighting in as many weeks. Truly amazing...

Our family has just returned from the San Destin area.
On Sunday (June 25) we went to the beach to check things out after checking in and suddenly the beaches were cleared by people yelling "shark!!"--only to realize it was a manatee. It was very close (maybe 20 feet from where waves were breaking). Then on Sat, July 1 we saw the 4 that the previous post was probably referring to--swimming together, VERY close in. During this past week, in addition to the manatees, we saw dolphins just past the first sandbar, sting rays, and a sea turtle. The turtle came right up to us, was swimming along in the shallow water, my little boy almost tried to pick him up--but I stopped him, not knowing what the laws were!! He was not a huge turtle but a pretty good size one.
We too felt very blessed to see such sea life in a weeks time--and NOT see a shark or jellyfish!!
