I have heard a lot of good things about this place and it always seems to have a crowd. I have never been there. What kind of food do they serve and what is a must-have from the menu. Any critques, suggestions, etc? Is it budget-friendly?

My husband is a doughnut fanatic. He'll drive 40 minutes to pick up doughnuts from the Donut Hole. We never eat breakfast there, so I can't comment on the food. We love their cake doughnuts - chocolate-iced chocolate, powdered sugar, and sour cream.

A favorite of visitors and locals for many years. Serving traditional/country breakfast all hours with generous portions. Daily homecooked lunch specials are always a hit. They also have giant burgers and sandwiches.

Before I moved here, I used to drive all the way from Tallahassee for their
Gourmet Muffins! :clap_1:

Breakfast is great, just don't expect cheap food. My favorite is the ch burger (ask for cheddar ch) and get the home fries.

For the record a dozen donuts is $6...not $11...

I agree with Beach Runner! The double chocolate doughnuts are perfect.
My wife and kids like the keylime doughnuts but actually they're all good.
My favorite memory of The Donut Hole is my wife and my first trip there. We stopped in one evening and looked at the menu for an ice cream desert. We asked the waitress about the Mudslide. She started describing it to us but then said, "Hold on!" Then walked over to one of the tables and took this guy's mudslide away from him and brought it over to us, showing us exactly what a mudslide looked like! He was a local police officer or County Deputy and really gave her the business but it was all in funn. That was when we first knew this area was something special. Just really great people in SoWal.
I also ordered the frog leg special for lunch once. That was the first time I'd had them served where the legs were still attached at the hip. Previously I'd had them before but only served like little chicken drummettes. That was pretty strange seeing this little frog's butt on my plate! But, Mmmm, they were good.
We'll be staying in a cabin at Topsail Hill in early August. Just a stone's throw from the DH. I KNOW we will be there daily. Enjoy!

We breakfast there one day last year, and I have to tell you, it was wonderful.

We had lunch there on our last trip. It was delish and the portions are HUGE!
GTTBD had a Ruben and I had a grilled chicken ceasar. Even though we were there for lunch lot's of folks were having breakfast. The breakfast looked killer too. I give it 2 thumbs up!

I go for breakfast at The Donut Hole when I want to see familiar faces from my childhood down there. It is a real locals hangout, but also has a following of visitors. The breakfasts are good old country style and very hearty. If you order the biscuits and gravy, have your cell phone set for a speed dial "911." My husband is inclined to donuts for breakfast as vacation food, so he'll often stop in and buy a box of mixed, always good. We have also ordered a few birthday cakes from them and the coconut layer cake is outstanding.

We have only tried the Donut Hole II which is the one just off 30-A towards Destin. Is the Donut Hole in Destin pretty much the same? I don't really have a need to drive that far since we're on 30A but just wondering if there are any differences between the two locations.

Is this the best place near BMB to get donuts? I have many fussy donut eaters in my clan and this is their first time anywhere on 30-A. They're giving me a hard time about not being near Krispy Kreme. :idontno:

In my opinion the success of Krispy Kreme donuts is due more to great marketing than to having a great product. Sure, they're pretty good; but I believe you'll have some Donut Hole converts in your group before you leave. But if they must have a Krispy Kreme, their website shows one in Destin.

Maybe have a taste test with Krispy Kreme going head to head against Donut Hole!

I thought I saw Krispy Kremes in Publix.

We still like Thomas's donut shack on Panama City Beach, and it's probably about 6 miles from the intersection of 98 and the road that goes to Panama City Beach (Winn Dixie is at this intersection). It's a throw-back to an earlier time when diners were really diners and beach shacks were really beach shacks. We get donuts and eat there or take them to the beach (and clean up after ourselves, of course.). We especially like going there off-season when the traffic doesn't slow us down on our way to the donuts.

Paula, we hit the Thomas Donuts also. Really good. And their country biscuits are great!!! Haven't had anything else there though. You are right, I love the old beach shack look it has.

You will need every calorie to fuel your penetration of the human phalanx that forms near the cash register when it is time to pay your bill. We ate there this morning and it was quite an adventure!

truly local nw florida food:

pine loggers's hash (large chunks of diced potatoes, red and green peppers, sausage and cheese) or topped with eggs for non-pine-loggers (they see enough eggs every day felling trees  )

truly whole broiled fish (really whole, scales still on, barely gutted and hardly even washed)

shovelnoses and bulldozers (live fire roasted, for breakfast!)

mantis shrimp (broiled)

pinfish bouliabase

mullet, lizardfish, shark and stingray

and the contents of the day-old shelf at the Destin Donut Hole!

gag me with a spoon! even i won't eat that stuff!
