Anglers spot fin whales 50 miles south of Destin
Lance Caine was on a three-day fishing trip with some friends from Atlanta when he noticed a puff of water coming from the water. They were about 50 miles south of Destin in the Gulf of Mexico and they went to investigate the sight.
“I don’t think that’s a porpoise,” Caine told his friends. And, sure enough, it wasn’t. Out swimming leisurely were about half-dozen fin whales.
“It was pretty amazing actually,” Caine said. “They were just out there. I thought you would have to go to California to see those. It was a unique experience and a very rare thing to see.”
The whales Caine and his friends saw were about 50 feet in length.
Caine, who has lived in Destin for four years and goes fishing every chance he gets, said he has never seen anything like it. After returning home, the group did a little research on their sighting and found out the fin whale has a fairly broad range in which it makes its home.
The fin whale can grow to 85 feet and is the second largest animal ever to live. The blue whale is the largest. Fin whales are most common in the Southern Hemisphere while smaller populations inhabit the North Atlantic and North Pacific. Some populations migrate between warm, low latitude winter mating grounds and cooler, high latitude summer feeding grounds, though their movements are less predictable than other large whales, according to research from OmPlace. Some lower latitude populations, such as in the Gulf of California and Gulf of Mexico, seem to live there year-round. In these areas, the whales can be found in offshore waters but may be seen close to shore if the water is deep.

what an awesome experience that must have been!
This is soooooooooooooo cool! I just absolutely  whales! I wish I could have seen them. Saw them (humpbacks) at Cape Cod one year--still one of my best memories.

Mr. Mango and I go every year to Provincetown Mass to see the humpback whales in September after the crowds have left. The whales start migrating in October. The boats take you out to the Stellwagon Bank. They are very curious and some , especially the baby whlaes come right up the boat to check you out. Nothing like getting covered in whale breath! We stay in Truro right outside of P-town in cottages owned by some friends.
We were also fortunate enough to see a Right Whale with a calf which was amazing becuase they are endangered, and environmentalists have no idea where they birth the calves either.
But the best was on vacation on the Jersey shore, Mr. Mango and I took our boogie boards out to catch a wave, and while on my stomach swimming out on the board, I saw the distant blow of a humpback whale only 50 ft from me.
Mr. Mango thought I was nuts, and that it was probably a dolphin, but I knew the distinct blow having been on so many whale watches. he believed me when everyone on the beach ran to the edge and started pointing. Came back in quickly because after the dive, he came could have come up under me! Turned out it was a younger whale coming in for peek! and was all the talk that week up and down the island.

How cool. I used to live in Alaska. We would go to a little fishing village and watch the Beluga Whales in their natural habitat. It was truly amazing, and they are amazing creatures!

ooh ooh ooh....does this mean I might see whales when we cruise Alaska in LESS than 3 weeks? I know Mr. K is trying to kill me...he is making us go in a helicopter and stand on a glacier. I have done a helicopter once in Hawaii and swore I'd NEVER do it again.

Yes, I am sure you will probably see whales while you are cruising Alaska. They are pretty much everywhere, and so are the bald eagles and moose. We had moose in our yard just like squirrels here. No kidding. Go do the glacier they are breathtaking...the only way to get there is the heli....you will be fine. I can't wait to hear all about your trip!!! Take bug spray though, the mosquitos are big enough to carry you away!!!!

We have seen humpback whales in both Hawaii and Turks and Caicos - it is awe inspiring!!!! Something I will recall when I am in my rocking chair and too old to travel anymore (that is if dementia or alzheimers doesn't block it.)

 That picture is gross! Love the pic with the dolphins riding the waves though. Totally cool! It is a good thing Sueshore didn't see storm stories last night on the weather channel, speaking of Alaska.
