Just returned home two days early after being told by the Water Department that our water at Adagio was contaminated with possible e coli bacteria, official there said "do not bathe small children in water, do not cook with water and do not brush teeth with water". We had a party of 8 people and 7 were sick most of the week, many other families at Adagio were sick as well, any others out there???

Where's Adagio? Is that the only area affected?

Whooa there a minute. You are saying ALL the water along 30A is tainted, or just at one particular house? Please, somebody post a link or something to substantiate this...why on Earth would you not be able to cook in the tainted water? Not saying you would want to, but usually they tell you you can boil it for so many minutes and it is ok. You are not pulling our leg, are you? :idontno:

Beach Runner, I looked up Adagio. It is between Destin and Seaside. Near Blue Mountain Beach. So it is a good way from where we rent personally. 30A Skunkape, this link below is just for the condominiums by that name. Thinking this place is where he was talking about. This is in Blue Mountain Beach according to the link!

Thanks! We have guests staying at our home, and I'd want to call and warn them if they are in any danger.

Hmmmm. Well, if nothing else now people from one end of the hwy to the other will now become germophobic and tuning in to subjective feelings of nausea, etc. Thanks for the public service Bama! Please clarify WHO(a county agent or somebody on vacation who thought the water smelled funny) exactly told you WHAT( E. coli? Either it is in there, or it isn't) was in the water WHERE (widespread or in one condo development). By the way, what symptoms did the people have out of curiousity? :idontno:

Maybe alabamaauthor will reply back to the inquiries as to where exactly it was! Won't affect us as we do not stay in that area. But other people that do would like to know! Maybe they will specify the symptoms. I looked on just the Beaches of South Walton sight and found nothing on there of course. Might be something they will not disclose.

To clarify, Adagio is a condominum complex in Blue Mtn Beach.
Occasionally, I used to get a notice on the door stating that the water could possibly be contaminated due to Regional Utilities working on the water in the neighborhood, but I always received the notices AFTER the fact, so if the water was contaminated, I would have already been sick.
Last year, I seem to recall numerous warnings of possible water contaminations in different parts of PCB. Warnings typically stated that contamination was possible and E Coli and Giardia were noted as possible problems.
FYI - the Tourist Developement Council (TDC) would never be responsible for disclosing such info. If anyone should be responsible, it should be Regional Utilities or Walton County Gov't, ie - Health Dept, not to mention the rental companies who rent out units in Adagio.
Alabamaauthor, did you rent the unit or do you own? If I rented a place and received notice of possible contamination of the water, not allowing children to bathe, people got sick, and I came home early, there would be just compensation following. ;-)

Sorry if I offended anyone, I was only trying to help anyone avoid what our famly has gone through---severe stomach cramps, vomiting (every 5 minutes for 12-24 hours, etc.) Adagio is at Blue Mountain Beach and the Regional Water Authority spokesperson told my husband it was "probably" and e coli bacteria---numerous water authorities have had this problem and yes it is very serious and yes it can be fatal for the young and very old. Tragically, a young girl in our building has a life threatening disease and her mother was very concerned about her health when we were leaving, she vomited over 30 times last night. A helper at "Sally's store on Blue Mountain Beach" told me two days ago that he had seen a run on "gut" medicine since last weekend. Adagio claims they know nothing, but the spokesperson for the Water Utilities was extremely kind and alarmed regarding health issues. If you look around various sites this bug can be a killer. I just hope everyone knows how dangerous this can be, my two year old granddaughter has been sick for four days, she is seeing her Dr. in Nashville tomorrow. People were getting water out of the pool this morning as we were leaving to flush toilets, those who could walk. Thankfully, I didn't get sick, God knows what He is doing when He spares the Mother. Hope everyone is well. God Bless those who aren't.

Alabamaauthor, you haven't offended anyone. We don't own down there but rent at Inlet Beach. It could happen there also. We do not drink the water in the condo we rent. We buy some water from the store. Thanks for responding back. No one likes or deserves to get sick from that kind of thing. I have never had E Coli but was bad sick many years ago with salmonella, a kidney infection, and another kind of bacterial infection. In the hospital and isolated. Not the same thing but causes horrible similar symptoms. Sorry your family had it so rough. Sounds bad! Hope everyone improves quickly, especially your 2 year old granddaughter and the young girl with the life threatening illness. I know her mother is concerned. And I know you are grateful you didn't come down sick.
That sounds bad. We have gotten a few of those notices as precautions after the water company lost power during and after hurricanes. Because when power is lost there is a chance of infiltration or backflow.
This is the first time I've heard of illnesses here.

Doesn't sound like E Coli. It sounds like Giardia. Here (http://www.medicinenet.com/giardia_lamblia/article.htm)is some brief info on symptoms and treatment. I have had Giardia and it is no fun, and certainly not funn.

Right you are SJ, or it could just be a virus which can spread like wildfire in a closed community (Norwalk, rotavirus, etc) like a condo complex. Just a hunch, but I would bet most people went in the pool! :bang: Thanks for clarifying the outbreak bama!

Thanks for the warning, we own at Bella Vita next door to Adagio. I'm checking with Maintenance before we come down. We'd be bringing 5 year old twin grands, who were born preemie and still have immunity issues. Can't take any chances. Again thanks.

Regional Water Utilities at Santa Rosa is the name of the water company. My husband only wishes he had the name of the woman he spoke with. Adagio will not admit any wrong, the rental manager said she issued the warning at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday when the water company issued the contamination warning---the interesting thing is that only the people in our group who drank tap water got sick---(fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarreha, headache, joint pain, extreme weakness, severe stomach cramps)and of course my two year old granddaughter drank the most. Don't believe what they say--look up water authority cover-ups---they are everywhere, remember the number one rule of travel-don't drink the water. Of course that is usually in third world countries not South Walton County. Godspeed.

Definitely sounds like you guys have a case of Giardia. There is treatment, but it typically will take a couple of days to clear up after treatment.
Should the rental agent be responsible for water quality if it is a problem with the provider?

Since Regional Utilities provides water to almost all of 30A, why would there be a problem with tap water at one location?
Lady D
06-10-2006, 10:53 AM
It may not just be at one location. When you are staying only at one location you most likely are not going to find out about the problems with water at other locations. Unless you happen to hear it mentioned by someone. Anyway, my husband and I like I said, do not drink the water in the tap. We go to the store and get bottled water and keep it in the refrigerator and use it the whole week! But of course, we have to take a bath, which we do, which involves using the tap water then. We've never had any problems when down! Of course, we are just off of 30A but still Sowal county! So I do not know if it is the same water supplier. And I wonder, if and when they are doing any work on the water system, like the sewer, if that causes a back up of unhealthy things! I am sure it would!

I just called Regional Utilities. The area of concern, according to the lady I spoke to is, from Snapperhead's to Santa Rosa Beach and Golf Club. This would include both the north and south sides of 30-A. She also said she had a boil water reccomendation for Heron's Watch. Heron's Watch is located next to Old Florida Fish House which is a good bit further east than the other area.

So glad to get this alert....we have a special needs grandchild with an incurable disease who has just spent 2 weeks at our beach house in Eastern Lake area......we haven't gotten around yet to putting in our water (Culligan) system as we just got in the house last month, but after reading all this, think we will get it done asap....THANK YOU!

Adagio is east of the above post's area of concern reported by Reg. Utilities.
FYI - You can get Giardia from brushing your teeth with contaminated water. ;-)

I was over at Blue Mtn on Friday and was told that Regional had been putting in new water lines in BMB..could this have caused the problem?? :idontno:

Any further information on this? Does anyone know if the problem has been cleared up. We are staying at Adagio July 1-10 and would definitely like to avoid being sick on vacation.

Our rental management company told us that Regional Utilities put a flyer on the door of every residence/condo affected. I hope that's true.

Does anyone know who to contact regarding this situation. I called the Adagio management office and they acted like they never heard about this. When further pressed all they would say was that they got a clean bill of health. Maybe since this thread got started over a week and a half ago I shouldn't worry but I'd like to know what to expect. Last year it was Dennis I had to worry about. Now this year it's DIARRHEA! Gross! :puke:

To be on the safe side, just use bottled water while you're here...just pretend you're in Mexico--Ole!

In general, the water is SoWal is fine. There are occasional isolated problems due to construction (just like anywhere else), but there have been no announcements of any major water problems anywhere on 30-A. Call Regional Utilities 850-231-5114 to put your mind at ease. SoWal does NOT have bad water and I resent Shelly's comment that it is like Mexico.

This is actually a pretty interesting thread for our family. We were vacationing the same week as the first poster and 4/6 adults got sick with what we thought was the flu! We were staying in Santa Rosa Beach between Snapperheads and Santa Rosa Beach Club. My 2 year old was sick with the flu a few days before we left for vacation, so we all thought we must have gotten the bug from him. Who knows? Maybe we had yucky water the week we were there too! :idontno:

I definitely know the SoWal water is fine and NOT like Mexico. We've never had to worry about it and even though we usually buy big water jugs for our drinking water I've used the tap for making tea, lemonade, etc...also our place has a great ice maker that we use the entire vacation. Other places I've stayed in Florida have had bad smelling water that makes showering even yucky. I've never experienced that anywhere in SoWal. Thanks for the number for Regional Utilities just to put my mind at ease. We're just looking forward to some funn and relaxation...7 days and counting! :clap_1:

I hear there is some kind of nasty stomach flu going around nationally.
My nephew and family had to postpone a flight home due to it and took him to a doctor in Boca Raton. They hydrated him, gave him some meds for nausea and they took a flight the next evening.
They were going back to Texas from Orlando Disney. They thought it was food poisoning or something else, but then when they got home a few days later everyone was feeling sick.

Giardia can be contracted from contaminated pool water it says there too.
I am not saying that is what happened at Adagio. Suppose no one will know for sure. Sorry your family had to endure that Alabama.
Occasionally though, people bring young children in the pools with NO swimmies on (those bathing diapers they sell in the store)
and twice within the past 2 seasons the pool had to be shut down and cleaned and shocked to death because a poop was found floating.
I also see people bringing in infants in the pools. Not for anything, but swimmie or not, you can not predict when an infant will go potty. At least with toddlers, parents have a better timing for when their children have to go potty, and should remove them from the pools when they sense that time is near.
