Amazing that people live by the assumption that Garbage will just vanish. If you go to the beach treat it with respect and throw you trash into a waste recepticle. There's one nearly every 50 to 100 yards on the beach.
If that's too much to ask then please vacation in Atlantic City, Virginia beach or better yet California. Abundant trash is common there and you might prefer it better since no one cares what you leave behind. But here we do so pack it in... pack it out. Sincerly Mother Earth :bang:

I echo your comments, though I'm not sure I want them littering beaches elsewhere either. If these people can't help preserve the beauty of the awesome beaches we've been blessed with, they should just stay home and litter their own backyards. We made a quick trip to Seagrove last weekend and were able to spend one wonderful day (Friday) enjoying the beach. The weather was absolutely perfect! Unfortunately, there was a group of young males near us partying under a tent and throwing their beer cans out on the sand. My daughter-in-law said she and my son had picked up a bunch of trash the day before left behind by this same group.

It is completely beyond me why people litter on beautifil beaches..anywhere.
In Oregon (where I lived for 20 years) we had /have SOLV (stop oregon litter and vandalism) and the organization works really well. Several times each year students and volunteers go down to the beach and clean up. As a result the beaches are much cleaner than neighboring California and peoples awarness of beach cleanliness is raised. Funded by donations and led by a dedicated man, it is a model for clean beaches.

We do that as well here, but not every day. So clean up behind yourselves!!

I only pick up 3 dog poop bags of litter on the beach today! As well as someones large beach shade which was destroyed by last nights storm. Don't know what happen to its top but guess it floating in the Gulf. Also numerous beach balls, floats, sand molds, watercolor cups, balloons and at least a dozen water bottle tops.Hopefully some day people will wake up! I know that the water will wash stuff onto the beach but it would wash up if people were more caring. :idontno:

Don't kid yourself...that's NEVER going to happen.Don't be so sure of that. Keep setting the example and you will inspire othes to follow. Action is everything. I was once inspired to pick up trash after seeing someone else doing so, and I do it all the time. Even if you inspire only one other person on occasion to follow suit, you have succeeded, because they will do the same and so the movement grows, slowly, then exponentially. ;-)

I couldn't agree more with Smiling Joe. I, too, was motivated to begin picking up trash and pieces of glass on my beach walks because I saw someone else doing it. It might even make a few of the litterers feel a little guilty and think twice if they see someone else picking up trash.

I'm always picking up trash on the beach, and I know Sueshore is really particular about keeping the beach clean, too. This is odd, but it doesn't bother me to do it. Doesn't make me the least bit angry about the slobs on the beach that I have to clean up after. It makes me feel a little regretful if nothing else--regretful that other people obviously don't see the natural beauty that surrounds them. (How they could miss it is beyond me, but miss it they must, or they'd never trash it up.)

Ah well, the slobs of this world will always be with us, but I'll be dammed if they'll ugly up my beach vacations. I honestly don't mind picking up after them because it improves MY view, and that's good for ME.

Thanks Joe, your right. i hope people will see me pick stuff up and follow my example. I did get a TY from some nice ladies this morning for my actions. And they helped me clear a raft full of seaweed from the shoreline. I continually hope for the best yet have a hard time looking past plain ignorance. Enough of my ranting and it's probably W's fault like everything else! JK

I always take a bag to pick up trash every time I go to the beach and I've been doing it since Seaside was just a wide spot in the road.

In the beginning I'd pick up some butts, an odd piece of fishing line and maybe a can. Every year that passes it just gets worse--my bag filled up more each time in a shorter distance. Now along with the "trash" we've got broken and tossed toys, balls, tents and chairs.

Maybe we have more people who learn to pick up the trash at the beach--but these aren't the folks who threw it there....I've given up hope long ago that people will learn never to toss it down in the first place.

I know what you mean. My pickup time increased every year until last Summer I spent most of my beach time picking up trash, and after a couple of months I got very frustrated. Add to that having to dodge chairs, umbrellas, tents, coolers, holes, and hundreds of plastic toys and it got the better of me. And then I would look up and there would be another group of people walking through the dunes. :(

It’s not just the beaches. I stopped the other day to admire the beautiful flowers in the park area at WaterColor and this woman drove by and threw her half-smoked cigarette quite close to where I was standing. I wish I had the guts to pick it up and throw it right back at her in her shiny, new SUV.

Perhaps A Nice Add Campaign Of Giving Out Small Trash Bags To Visiting Children. Make It A Game...clean Up The Beach. Have A Couple Of Businesses Donate A Soda Or Something For Every Full Bag The Child Collects. Mom And Dad Have To Bring The Kid In For The Soda, So There's A Potential Sale And Whoever's Business Is On The Bag Will Look Like They Are Really Doing Their Part. Too Bad I Don't Have A Business Or I Would Do It Myself. Hint Hint. Even If It's Not Really Beach Trash, At Least It's In A Bag Now. I really like this link. The overall feeling is do something about it!!!!! We all have to become active instead of sitting around talking about it. Turn off the TV and get active!!! Think Globally but act locally. I have recently been involved with a Panhandle Chapter of Surfrider. We are having our 1st Annual Beach Clean up Saturday June 17th, 9:00am at the Crab Trap on Old Hwy 98. I hope some of you all can make it out. We will be doing a bunch of these at various locations but wanted to start our first one where there is ample parking. Please come help protect our greatest resource. Also check out or join the Panhandle Chapter @ www.surfrider.org

Thanks,
Bobby J

Ya know, she can be charged with a criminal act for doing that because it can lead to wildfires, especially with as dry as it's been the last couple of months. I want to say it's a misdemeanor, but Jeb! was on tv a couple weeks back saying it could also be a felony charge.

i however, being of either sterner, or stupider stuff, have done just that before - they simply denied it was 'their' trash and said the place we were at had someone on staff that was paid to pick it up! silly me!

perhaps its time to get the tdc to purchase a king (http://www.cleanbeach.com/beachking.htm) and solve the problem - and pay for it by renting it out to the other beaches - all hail the king

child labor laws keep kids from picking up trash for money, plus sanitary and health issues would stop parents from letting them really fast once one got hurt

I wouldn't want to get rid of the seaweed on the beach.

I wouldn't want to get rid of the seaweed on the beach.

"Scarifier - The adjustable scarifier on the Beach King® II levels and smoothes the beach before sand is processed. When in the down position, the scarifier prevents large objects from entering the machine. The machine can be run with the scarifier engaged or with the scarifier disengaged - perfect for cleaning seaweed and other fine bulky material. "

according to the pics on the website, the king's 'scarifier' is a big vertical blade thingy can be run either up, i.e., remove seaweed (and chairs, coolers, tents, etc) or down (no seaweed, chairs, coolers, tents, etc), just knocks them around and possibly crushes them instead - poetic justice if you ask me for those who left their crap on the beach - "oh man, its trashed! wha?"

i recall routine seaweed cleanup at large condos over the years due to the stink of rotting sargasso - using a bulldozer that didn't care how much sand that went to the dump with the seaweed

also removes the jagged broken glass beer bottle, from just under the sand, that some drunk busted last night, before you (or your poor child!) step on it and get cut all the way down to the bone!

Will it also dig out the 8" metal spikes which people use to secure their tents? :bang:They will need a bigger container on that machine if it picks up chairs, umbrellas and toys.

Don't you know I would be all over it, but I think we would have to wait until Oct (after turtle season) before we could do it. Some of the trash can be picked up by hand, but it is rather bulky (like the concrete chunks) or jagged. Most of the crap is piece of pilings which you, Bobby and myself could not budge without a loader.
