well, tomorrow's the day - we head to grayton! finally
much to smiling joe's dismay  we chose may to come down this year.
we're very excited. i mostly lurk on this board - so i know i'll be looking around trying to figure out if the people i see are part of this Funn crowd :)

is the seaside wine festival this weekend?
i've been reading up on Amore, Great Southern(is this where shades was?)
and Cafe spiazzia. any recommendation on which would be good for kids too? i'll have to read back through the restaurante threads again today.
i really want to try great southern.

we are so ready for a vacation.
i'm hoping for good weather and no flies - but i'll take what i get!

ok - well, y'all hold down the fort til i get there :funn:

kdp4th:welcome: The fountain outside at Amore is excellent for kids to play in...and they don't mind if the kids play in it! Olive said it was the best investment they made!

reeceOh, you know you are lying. The only reason the rates are cheaper in May is because the water is filled with Sargassum and June Grass, the air is filled with Mosquitos, Deer Flies, Dog Flies, and poison from the mosquito spraying trucks and airplanes, Alligator mating season is at its peak, causing Alligators to be very territorial on the Coastal Dune Lakes, Sharks are starting to swim in closer to shore to eat the pompano, the wind is blowing hard, sandblasting you when you are on the beach, etc.

Are the cheaper rates really worth coming in the shoulder seasons? :idontno:

ps- how are those flies by the way?Deer Flies are starting to come out -- ask KimmiFunn, though I haven't seen the Dog Flies. Temps are supposed to soar to 90F today and continue throughout the week.

You better grab you some Bug Juice, and I don't mean that crap with Deet, which doesn't work on the flies.

They were huge and shook my house more than Hurricane Katrina winds did.

These horrid dog flies we were bothered by last year. I was told I think they come in when the winds are out of the north or something! Out of the five years we have been coming to the beach, we had never had any problems with them until last year. And you are right, we bought some sunscreen with deet and some repel with deet and none of it kept them off of us on the beach. What will? Hate them! Found a pic of a deer fly! These are the same as what we call May flies. And they do bite hard!

Deer Fly

Smilie J's Bug Juice works well at repelling Mosquitos, Deer Flies, and Yellow Flies, but I have not taken it to market just yet.

May Fly
I have never been bitten by a May Fly. They like to hang out in trees overhanging the water.

So that is an actual May fly. Whatever that weird fly is we find up here and at my mother in law's in the country looks like a stealth bomber as to its wings and bites the heck out of you. And they are only seen in May, that is why we refer to them as May flies. Couldn't actually tell you what they are. That May fly looks gross! Wouldn't want that on me! Thanks Smiling Joe.

The first time I got bit by a yellow fly my foot swelled up so bad I could not put on my tennis shoe and barely my Birkenstocks - extended to the last buckle. However, I have not had a bite swell that bad since then. It's almost like I gain more immunity every year. Or maybe it is all in my head. Probably the latter.

AND Reece - I hope you enjoy your trip! See ya around!

ok well, i hope those flies take a hike before tomorrow. we've been coming in may for 4 years and never had a fly problem. we came last year in august and it was terrible. i assumed, incorrectly i guess, that they weren't out in may since we've never experienced them. guess we've just been lucky.
hopefully our luck hasn't run out

whatever - we'll have a great time.

sj - what's in the bug juice again ? vinegar? i remember a thread about it - it sounded quite smelly :)

Almost wish we did SJ...we were in Sowal in Jan/Feb earlier this year...went on a pontoon boat ride into St. Andrew's Bay and saw/and heard what we thought were "bomb" smoke and noises...it brings it home...

The Deer fly is a nuisance for sure - and so is the dreaded Maine 'Moose Fly' which really hurts

Yes you do build a resistance over time. They hardly even bother with me any more. I laugh at them.
