Hi all, I've noticed on some of the Destin beach cams that the water looks awfully murky in close to the break line. Do we have June grass already? Sargassum?

What's the story?

Just some rough water.

but it appears to be settling a bit, so unless we get some _________ ...(I cannot jinx Mayhem) this weekend, it should be clearing very soon.

Thanks, guys. It looks clear out toward the sand bar. That's why I suspected June grass, as it tends to gather fairly close in.

You might be getting the weather we had early this morning. Lots of lightning, thunder, rain and barking from Molly! She is not a fan of the big noise.

JB, the June grass is here in the water in spots at Grayton. I little Sargassum Grass on the beach, too.

Oh well, at least we have a pool this time. Guess it will be fun looking beyond the trash at the horizon from the balcony at the condo.

My first trip (for more than two days) down there in two years. I can't catch a break to save my life. No way I'm letting a toddler play in this smelly, nasty trash.

Can't blame anyone but mother nature for this, but this really sucks. :pissed:

I think our next vacation may be to the mountains.

I'm done.

Good grief- it's just seaweed! It smells like.....the ocean!! My kids have played in it just about every year. They have probably ingested some of it too- good fiber and lots of vitamins I am sure. I think there are resorts around that have people to rake the beaches clean for you if it freaks you out that much.

If you go to the mountains, watch out for poison ivy, snakes, bears, and ticks.;-)

I'm just one of those OCD-types that wants everything to be perfect. Of course, it never is and I need to learn to accept it.

There just always seems to be one issue every single time we go that puts a damper on things. All things considered, I guess this isn't that bad.

I just want the water and sand to look like my avatar. That's not really TOO much to ask, is it?

It's not bad! You and your little one can find lots of cool stuff hiding in the seaweed like shells and critters. Make a sandperson instead of a sandcastle and use the seaweed for hair!

You have the right attitude, jen-ay. :clap_1: One of my all-time favorite beach memories is from the year we stayed at Seaside and the shoreline was covered with gobs and gobs of seaweed. The kids--we had four of them with us, all little squirts--made a huge sand fort and spent hours that week pelting each other from behind their "forts." It was so funny to watch them! They reeked of eau de seaweed like you wouldn't believe but it was so hilarious watching their "medieval tournaments." Best entertainment ever, and it took the sting out of not having a picture-perfect beach for our vacation. In retrospect, that nasty beach made the week. Who'd a thunk it?

I don't think man could have placed it so nicely on the beach. Look at that smile on those two in the kayak and tell me that they don't like it, too. ;-) Relax a bit and open your mind, JB.

i'd take that sargassum stuff any day over the darn flies!
we'll be there in 11 days(who's counting? )...i am feeling the same way jb - like i want it to be perfect. i feel this way every year. it's my one time down there each year and i guess i feel like there is so much riding on it.
i'm always hoping that no one gets sick and that we have good weather.
but the truth is, it's just nice to be there. it's nice to be away from work and at the beach. it just feels good. so, don't let that seaweed stuff ruin it - just use one of your kids rakes or shovels and move it out of the way! then plop down in your chair and have a drink! :D

next year, to remedy my anxiety over the trip being less than perfect because of weather or illness or flies - i have decided that a week is not enough. we are going to do 2 weeks!

Won't You Be My Neighbor

It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?...

It's a neighborly day in this beauty wood,
A neighborly day for a beauty.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?...

I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you.
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So, let's make the most of this beautiful day.
Since we're together we might as well say:
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?
Won't you please,
Won't you please?
Please won't you be my neighbor?

Please remember the value of the sargassum grass and june grass. It is a great dune builder. From what I can tell, Grayton just received about 20' of extra beach over the last week and a half.

humpf! if it wasn't for the seaweed, tourists wouldn't have so much fresh fish to munch on

i define tourist as non-native - only a handful of people in florida are native, the rest are tourists

i remember the native stickers from a few years back - i doctored mine to say naiive, but nobody got it

We had those in Colorado, too, back in the days when natives outnumbered newbies. I had one that said Semi-Native.
Before we left, I began seeing stickers that said It's All Good.
It's been pouring rain and blowing since 2:30am. Be interesting to see what the beach is like after this.

I'd love to be near a murky gulf. We are more than 10 hours away. Only the muddy Ohio to look at. We've got to do some long weekends.

One year we headed to Hattiesburg MS on a Friday after work. Drove as far as we could, just inside the MS state line. Next morning, drove past the campus to see where the stadium was and then headed south to the gulf. After the game, we headed back down to the gulf for dinner and then headed back a different way home - up 65 as far we could. Returned to Louisville on Sunday. It wasn't the same as being at Grayton but it was sand and surf.

(Maybe we'll try the dunes of Indiana this year as a substitute. We're missing our Florida trip for the first time in probably 20 years. 14 of us are going to Cancun. Don't have enough time or money to do both. Love the board. Keeps me connected.)

;-)You might want to heed SJ's warning here. May is a known Portuguese Man O' War mating season. Many wash up on beach looking for "action". Very nasty to be stung by the tentacles. October is worse still because of Sargento weed. Moderating temperatures in October bring this nuisance ashore with it's sharp thorns. Clumps of Sargento Weed can be found near most all walkovers. June, July, and August are the best times to visit.

:D Boy, that brings back a memory. An ecology class I had in college took a trip to the IN/MICH Dunes and also to a bog where we walked out on it and studied really neat insect-eating bog plants.

I also remember it getting down to 25 degrees that night and we slept in a tent.
