Early yesterday afternoon, there was a lot of smoke drifting south from a big fire that was roughly north of Inlet Beach, maybe 3 to 5 miles north. I'm guessing it was a forest fire or someone burning off some land. Does anyone know anything about it?

Saw the smoke late in the afternoon. When I took Molly out earlier this morning I smelled something burning. It really unnerves me when I smell something burning...is there a place where one can find out about controlled burns in the area? I know the area has been without rain and is very dry.

It still smells like fire outside!!! I know jfunn is HOT, but this is serious! Anyone know what is going on?
Not sure, but there is almost always burning going on somewhere. Most of it is "controlled" by the forestry service.

I think you are right Jfunn. I saw quite a lot of smoke east of Pt. Washington. But I have no idea what happened..again no news reporters in south walton!

I don't have any specific info on the fire yesterday but I find that the Seabreeze 106.3FM has the best local information on fires in south Walton.
When I see smoke I usually tune them in and more often than not they will inform you as to where the fire is.

Someone is back in WalCo.:D
The fire burned over 300 acres north of the Intra-coastal, off Steel Field Road. It was believed to have started from a cigarette being thrown onto the road-side.
If you smoke, please keep your butts in your own ashtray instead if stinking it up for the rest of us.

Channel 7 out of Panama City carried some info on it, though I only saw the very end - it was in Steele Field, which is not very far on the other side of the Intracoastal from Point Washington, Inlet Beach, and all points between. That area is only accessible via a LONG dirt road that comes out on Hwy 79 north of West Bay, or by boat, and that makes it a hell of a place for an emergency.
Good fishing, though.

I actually own a getaway in Bunkers Cove that is at the end of the 20 miles of dirt road. It is scary when you think of an emergency. I "heard" that it was 2000 acrest not sure if that is correct though. What a shame, it is important for people to be aware of what they are doing.

We had smoke and ashes at our place near Eastern Lake all afternoon. This morning you could still smell smoke and see the remnants of the smoke hanging offshore, but it's cleared up now.

It is nice, trees, nature sounds, almost like being in the mountains but no altitude. It is always 10 degrees cooler there than on the beach.

The fire started out near Steelfield Road Monday around 10 a.m.
Strong winds quickly spread the fire to 814 acres of land between Steelfield Road and the inter-coastal waterway. The Florida Division of Forestry was on scene all day working to stop the large fire. Crews were called in from Bay County, Southport, West End, West Bay and even Walton County to help control the blaze. Almost a dozen bulldozers worked to dig trenches, which serve as barriers to stop the flames.
Air support was also called in with an airplane to survey the fire from above and a helicopter to drop water. Crews finally got a handle on the blaze around nine last night and say it is now 85% contained, but 15% of the area still has hot spots. Crews will stay on the scene overnight to monitor the area.
If you have any information about the wild fire, then call the Division of Forestry Arson Hotline.
That number is 1-800-342-5869. The agency is giving up to a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in this investigation.

There was another fire which burned about 38 acres in Bay County yesterday, thought to be started by a cigarette. They are calling it arson. I believe it burned several homes.
Please be careful!!!

be sure your cigarette is out before casually tossing it out the window. :bang: it's really not littering, is it?

One of my pet peeves. If you want to fry your lungs, hack like a sputtering engine every morning and wheel around with portable oxygen in your golden years, more power to ya. But please, don't throw your annoying butts all over the place;not just a fire hazard but so, so messy. One of these days when somebody is parked at a light ahead of me and flicks one out, I'm gonna get out and fling it into their cab...GROSS! :bang:

But it is a criminal misdemeanor if the cops happen to see it and want to charge you for it.

getting caught throwing a cigarette butt out the car window is indeed 'littering' and comes with a medium fine - the same as if you were caught chunking your burger bag out the window (experience - throwing a cigarette butt out the window and getting caught for it)
i happily smoke, but not the store bought big tobacco crap of brown paper bags sprayed with addictive chemicals like crack, but real organically raised and hand cured native american tobacco lovingly mixed with sage and sweetgrass that smells like a raspberry torte
BTW, if you see a big black truck pulling a big white boat in your rear view mirror by the brilliant light of the full moon tonite, uh, you might want to get out of the way, as the last time the cobia were running i don't remember ever hitting the brakes during the whole trip down
see ya out there
