I have rented a beach wheelchair during visits to Grayton.. I remember it was a place that rented all kinds of beach equip, bikes, etc. I haven't need on for the last seral years. I'll see if I an find the name of the place I rented from for you. I recall the shope was around Destin, Sandestin, but they delivered the wheelchair to me in Grayton.

Grayton Beach State Park has a beach wheelchair available there. We used one for my Dad this past summer and I feel I should warn you that they are not that easy to move through the sand, even with the big wheels. It took two of us--one pulling, one pushing, to get him back up the hill. If you know someone with a beach permit who could drive you to Grayton, it would be SO much easier.

Her we go, go to the 30-A Bike Rentals web site. You can see the wheelchair they rent. If your Dad has any amulatory ability, this chair functions well as a beach walker. I found I could use the wheelchair to walk a short way and sit in the chair to regain strength and then walk again. The previous poster is correct, the navagability of the beach wheel chair can be easy or hard, depending on how packed the sand is. just like the trucks. I know the truck owners let some air out of their tires to gain traction in the soft, fluffy sand...that might work equally well with the wheelchair. The number at the 30A Bike Rental store, the number is 850-865-7433

Again, depending on how ambulatory he is, what about taking him by boat from the Grayton boat ramp around to the beach? It would also depend on you having a boat of some kind but it is a thought. Could he get onto a sit on top kayak? A john boat with a chair in it would have him over to the beach in no time.

Are you thinking about an electric beach wheelchair? Or an electic chair to get around on bike paths and boardwalks? I had been confined to electric wheelchair until a few months back...I don't know of any electric beach wheelchairs. If you can get his electric wheelchair to an area with boardwalks, I like Grayton, he can toodle around the neighborhood, ride down the bike paths over the lakes and lagoons. I don't know where you are, I am outside of Bham, does your vehicle have wheelchair access? or can you stow his wheelchair and take it with you? If you need to borrow a ramp let me know. You might come out better calling a durable medical supply in the area and inquire about renting an electric wheelchair down there...Tell your Dad I said "keep on truckin'" and have fun

Hope I am not e-bugging you, But years of visting the beach in my wheelchair have taught me some things. First, as to meals, the best most accessible dining establishments I have found are: Cafe 30A, ramp accessible and if you call ahead they will fix you a table that is easy in/out...fabulous food; 2. Fish out of Water at Watercolor...fantastic food and if you ask for a table on the balcony at sunset...perfect; and last but certainly not least...for fabulous breakfast go to Hibiscus B&B in Grayton...wonderful food and they have a patio and will serve your food at the outdoor table. Your Dad can simply drive his chair up to the table and enjoy an outdoor breakfast in a garden lush with ferns. And, while at Hibiscus ask, Cheri, the owner to let you and your Dad check out their handicap accessible room, The Big Easy...This room is the absolute best facility for anyone with limitations of mobility...It is truly Old Florida, the easy way. There is a wonderful oyster bar , I can't recall the name, but as you are leaving Grayton, go straight across 30 A After less than a block you will see a retail development on the left, It is a courtyard like affair and there is an oyster bar with an outdoor deck for eating...Again, your Dad can roll right up and enjoy some fabulous Oysters...I recomm.end the Around the World Oyster sampler platter .And , again, ya'll have fun now....

I'm pretty sure that a standard electric wheel chair will not work on the beach. The sand is really soft right now and it would probably bog down very quickly. You might want to see if someone with a beach permit for their truck/SUV would be willing to help you out. Anybody out there willing to play taxi?

I am pretty sure the oyster bar Jensieblue is speaking of is the Hurricane Oyster Bar. Across 30A and turn right into the first set of buildings and then right into a drive and down to the parking area. Wonderful oysters and a great "happy hour" from 4 to 6 p.m. as well. Oysters on the half shell only $4.99 a dozen and draft beer a dollar. Best deal and oysters in the area and no, they are paying me for the plug.
