They were too busy having a news coverage "O" about the possibility of a hurricane hitting New Orleans to bother with things like weather forecasting.

As of the last day or two the Bermuda High was helping us greatly by sitting pretty much on top of Florida. Let's hope it stays there, as it appears it might.

I likey! (Not if they hurt anyone in Florida, of course.) If they meet in the middle of North Georgia, we could finish filling the lake.
One of my co-workers said the other day that now is the time for us to rise up and take over the dam, since Florida probably doesn't want our water right now.

Thanks, but that still doesn't tell us the orgin. TS Fay is also short an "e." With names like Ivan, Katrina, and Gustav, for these storms, I was just curious as to the origin of the names for the storms.
jodiFL
08-30-2008, 08:29 AM
Hanna's origin is Hebrew, and its use, German
Ivan is Hebrew, Katrina is German, and Gustav is Swedish. And since we ARE the melting pot it seems only fit that we include other non-anglo traditional names.
Try this link ....

 Apparently at 3am I got two different links confused, one had the origin and then I copied the wrong one.
I would bet that Fay is just a variant like Hanna and the NHC just has this, no mention of how they pick the names.
Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists made by the National Hurricane Center.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the use of short, distinctive names in both written and spoken communication is quicker and less subject to error than the older latitude-longitude identification methods.
The original lists were composed entirely of female names. In 1979, male names were introduced and now alternate with female names alphabetically.
The six lists of names are used in rotation, so the list used in 2008 will again be used in 2014. The lists are maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization.
The only situation in which the list is changed is if a storm is so costly or deadly that using that name for a future storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. In such a case, the WMO committee will strike the name from their lists at their annual meeting and replace it with another name.
2005, in particular, was a rough year for tropical storms, with five names being retired, including Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan and Wilma.
Since 1953, 67 names have been stricken from the lists. Several names have also been changed since the lists were made. For example, in 2004, Gaston replaced Georges and Matthew replaced Mitch.
The lists contain 21 names each year. Should more than 21 tropical storms occur in a season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc. 2005 marked the first time in over 60 years of regularly-named Atlantic storms that all 21 regular names were used and the Greek system had to be employed. Tropical Storm Zeta was sixth Greek-named storm of the year and brought 2005’s final tally to a record 27 tropical storms.

From the latest projections, it looks like Hanna will be ok as long as you don't reside in the South Carolina low country next weekend. :yikes:
Once again, it's very early and she's as indecisive as Fay, but with the rivers and marshes over here, the topography is very similar to LA and MS.

Turn baby turn. My latest guesstimate looks like SWGB's track so we shall see what today holds. If it is correct, I will only have 25-30mph sustained and 40-45 gusts. I am still going ahead and filling up a gas can or two as they haven't had a hurricane affect this area in a while so I don't want to be without power.

This is good news, Sio. I hope the tides, which were supposed to be low when Hanna moved in, helped keep some erosion off the the beaches. I was on the Jersey shore this morning and came home earlier, but not without taking in an early morning surf. OK, bodyboard in water knee deep because it was low tide.
