Draper Lake pops its cork

Recently Draper Lake, one of the environmentally fragile and rare coastal dune lakes did exactly what it is supposed to do: it broke through a sand barrier adjoining it with the Gulf of Mexico. Eyewitnesses to the event think the breach was aided and abetted by small children with shovels and pails, but the lake frequently does this on its own.
When the breach occurred, the rushing water was so fierce it washed two children into the gulf and they had to be rescued by kayakers.
“I’ve seen Draper Lake go from a six-inch trickle of water to a raging river eight feet wide in five minutes,” said Cliff Knauer, an engineer with Preble-Rish and a local expert on the coastal dune lake system. “Draper Lake and Western Lake do what they are supposed to do on a regular basis, which is an indication of a healthy coastal dune lake,” he said.
Member of the Coastal Dune Lake Advisory Board (CDLAB) received permission last year from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to erect signs around the lake, warning people not to tamper with the outflows. “It is hard to get the permits from FDEP and we can only post the signs on a 4 x 4 post with no concrete and they frequently get washed away,” said Laura Pennington with Walton County Public Works. There was no sign present on the day Draper Lake erupted. New signs have been ordered for those that have been swept away and will be installed again as soon as they are ready. The signs read: “Any excavation seaward of the coastal construction control line (CCCL), to include opening or alteration of coastal dune lake outfalls, is PROHIBITED without possession of a valid permit pursuant to Chapter 161 of the Florida Statutes. Violations are punishable by fines and other administrative penalties.”
The signs have been up on the lakes for a year, but the dune outfalls are frequently tampered with. “The case on Draper Lake is not the usual case of five guys with a case of beer that we usually hear about,” said Meg Nelson, chairman of CDLAB. “However, the water is under so much pressure it doesn’t take much to cause the breach and it could definitely have occurred because children were digging in the outfall.”

5 guys w/ a case of beer?

All the "dig outs" I hear about are kids or property owners.

The eyewitness who posted the photos of the Draper breach seemed rather certain it was the kids - love that the pics show several people standing around holding plastic shovels or buckets.

Eastern Lake finally let out a bunch of water. I walked from One Seagrove Place a couple nights ago to the outlet at Eastern and it had yet to break out. I knew it was close though. Then yesterday while walking through the forest I noticed the ditches leading to the lake had dropped significantly and as I arrived at the back of the lake, it was about 3 1/2 feet lower than the day before.

I would have liked to have watched the actual outflow. I guess it seals up pretty quickly. Lake Powell, closer to Panama City was open for quite some time. Being a bigger lake, I guess, contributes to how long the lake takes to drain. I'm just amazed that Eastern drains as much as it does in such short fashion.

Draper Lake is not open this morning either. There is a little puddle about 1/4 mile West of Draper that I don't even know if it has a name, that was flowing this morning.

There is a creek that breaks through on occasion between the Ed Waline entrance and Gulf View Heights (Goatfeathers) entrance. Is that what you're talking about?

Mike:

I walked over to Eastern Lake's gulfward shoreline tonight after we got in town and also noticed that it had opened. I'm not sure I've ever seen it's outflow this far to the east. Usually the outflow is due south or slightly west, but tonight it goes almost horizontally east in front of the southeasternmost Lakewood street.

On that note, I appreciate the rednecks who were having a late night cocktail hour around 11:30 tonight. They had just left when I went over to the Lake, but they left behind 3 empty cans of Beast Light, an empty bottle of Busch Light, and the potentially hazardous bottle caps from the Busch Light and a missing Corona bottle. The odd thing is that the TDC public trash bags are in place, including one on their way back up to their full size Chevy or Dodge pick-up that was parked at the walkover. I guess they felt it better to leave their refuse on the beach as some type of shrine/memorial to their special event. If they wish to reclaim their belongings, they are in the TDC trash bag in front of Eastern Shores condos.
