Olive, about 10:20pm or so a tornado was seen on radar, somewhere just SE of Freeport city limits moving toward Red Bay. This morning I saw the 'Camping on the Gulf' billboard was ripped off the structure on 331 just north of the bridge. The weather was a bit hairy, but I didn't see or hear a tornado.

The FL DEM (dept of emergency management) hasn't been updating their Daily Situation Reports online, so there is nothing there to report.
My question is, does a Doplar indicated tornado mean that there is an actual tornado, or does it have to be confirmed by a person's observation?

SJ, i think it isn't officially a tornado until an after-assessment. Credible eyewitness reports help, along with doppler returns, but I think it's a combination of all three that determine what it's called.

Tornado warnings are normally issued according to Doppler radar. Typically they don't wait to give one until one is seen, as in the "old" days. I hate tornado warnings at night.
Fuzz went to Panama City yesterday and tells me that he saw one trying to form somewhere in the Rosemary / Inlet Beach area, right in front of him. :yikes:Really dark, low funnel cloud dipping down, plus rotation at ground (water?) level, trying to meet. He pulled off the road in preparation to turn around and haul buggy, but then the funnel went back up into the cloud. Far as I know, that one was never called.

Doppler radar only indicates that there is an upper level rotation in the atmosphere, not that a tornado has touched down on land.

A tornado did hit in my front yard last night at 10:35 PM. That is something I never want to go through again. Not much damage other than a really nice tree I had that was snapped off about 8-10 feet up and deposited next to my house, thank goodness not on the roof. Got to get my home satt internet re-aimed since it twisted it off in a weird direction, twisted up my television antennae, but I never use it anymore so no big deal. Put some limbs onto the power lines but Chelco is going to come and remove them for me today.
Like I did not have enough going on in my life right now. lol! Everyone was okay, just the adrenaline rush of me waking them up and putting them in the hall last night.
Definitely an E ticket for those that know what I am talking about.

WRobert, Sorry about your tree. My Mom lost the top part of a large tree in her yard near Lake Stanley. Maybe same storm.

Tornadoes don't have to actually touch down to do quite a lot of damage. While living in Tennessee I once looked out in my yard to see half of the trees bent south and the other half just 50 feet away across a clearing bending north. The tornado was descending directly above the house. We lost a few trees that day...and scared the bejeezes out of all of us! :yikes:
Glad to hear everyone is OK!!

Keep in mind that we are currently projected to be on the Western side of Gustav and that generally means tornados. Just be alert and aware.

The similarities continue, I'm left handed so it's always been a problem. That's why I drive and the phone tells me where to go.

Try 150 mg of Dephenhydramine (Benadryl, Unisom etc.) The next day you won't even feel any side effects and you'll breathe easy and sleep like a rock....

They both leave me worthless the next day. I'm going to try exercise, seems to be the way to go.
