While growing tired of listening to Jim Leach speak at the DNC, I flipped through the major networks. I was not too surprised to see that none of the the major networks were broadcasting the former Republican from Iowa, but I was surprised to see that CBS was interrupting the Convention coverage with coverage of a bust of some people who authorities believe may have been plotting to assassinate Sen. Obama. Even more surprising is that it hasn't made it to SoWal.com, until my post.
Comedian Dave Chapelle has already thought about this scenario, and he says that if he, being a black man, was running for Office of the President, he would choose a Mexican as his running mate for VP, ... for insurance. I kid you not. Saw him on TV last week saying that.

Reports are they are probably just a bunch of knuckleheads caught with drugs and a rifle who have ties to a white supre macy group. But no indication that they actually were planning anything.

They're saying white supremacists. Not a good thing & somewhat threatening. I only hope and pray this will not be a common occurrence for Obama.
Chapelle came up with that many years ago and it rings true. A lot of people feel he will not survive. He has a lot of courage to stand up with a giant target, hoping we have moved past that. But there a re a lot of crazy people out there.

...when police in the eastern suburb of Aurora stopped a truck that was swerving erratically. The driver, 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell, had a suspended driver's license...
Say it ain't so. I wonder if the truck was orange.

Here's the link to the CBS article (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/08/07/politics/main4329138.shtml). It seems more like a case of a troubled person rather than a real threat.

A person who threatens to assassinate Obama, possesses rifles sighted in at 850 yards, and plenty of armor-piercing ammo, isn't a "real threat?" I bet the SS doesn't see it as small talk. Mentally unstable or not, that will land you in prison. I'd put money on the mentally unstable as being more likely to actually go through with the threats, than a person of sane mind.
If he was a real threat, I'm sure the Secret Service and Obama's Campaign doesn't want Obama to look vulnerable. That may also be the reason why the other networks never ran the story last night.
Thanks for the link to the other CBS story. That guy is in jail, I believe. It happened earlier this month, story dated Aug 7, 2008. This new story was from yesterday's arrest of other people.

I'm a big proponent of not giving buttheads who want to assassinate the President or candidate air time.
Not only do many just crave publicity, it gives other buttheads ideas.

I am getting a sense of deja vu from this thread.... :leaving:

I know what you mean. With all of the Kennedy comparisons, it cannot be good.
That said, I'm sure the Secret Service is continuously arresting people for threatening the President, and the Presidential candidates, so it is probably nothing new or unique.

Yes, didn't our very own local Republican wacko just get in trouble for threatening McCain?

This doesn't shock me one bit. I have been worried for his safety all along. There are alot of weirdo crazy types that hate him for one stupid reason. Never underestimate the nastiness of racial prejudice.

Any conservative or Republican who assassinates Obama should be executed on site without question. The problem is I'm afraid the more likely perp will be a Hillary supporter and Republicans will be blamed for the treachery.

Just a few short weeks ago, a local Republican e-mailed threats against McCain to the new Republican headquarters here, and a smart comment made it look like a Democrat was behind the threat. It was a little irritating to know that several local Republicans were posting on that thread, yet did nothing to clarify the facts until the facts were revealed, content and a little amused that others might think it was a Democrat that made the threat.

It isn't a dem/rep thing. It is a effed up thing. the guy arrested back in early Aug for threatening to kill Obama, also wanted to put a bullet in GW Bush's head. Some people are just dumb, and others just ain't right. The gov't has been effed up, assassinating people for years.
