Let's see, Barack thinks that 30 year senators are what has broken Washington and Biden thinks that Barack lacks the experience to lead the country. Sounds like a good match. I guess he will bring him Delaware.

Does this still apply? I recall that W Bush had to get a "seasoned" political insider to overcome his foreign policy inexperience and ignorance. In other words, this exemplified Bush's weaknesses. Obama pulls the same card 8 years later and I assume he is wise and insightful beyond his years. So "Hope" and "Change" includes a ticket with a 35 year "Washington Insider" Senator on the ticket? I thought the two major considerations of a VP candidate include someone who can immediately step in to be president; check for Biden. And someone who cannot hurt your campaign; ???

I am happy about Biden, and crack up at those who picked at Obama for not having enough experience, then he picks a VP that has experience, then he is criticized for picking the Washington insider. Well, duh! Any politician that has been in Washington long enough to be "experienced" is going to be an "insider".

I don't think this was his best pick. The way the press was pumping this up, everybody was expecting a rock star, what they got was a generic. The analysis by the press already seems to be shifting toward the idea that Obama wasn't confident in his ability to win on his own. I heard that on CNN, and in an AP report. This is not what people were expecting, especially Hillary supporters. They are now, probably more than ever, disastisfied with Obama overall.
This opens up a great opportunity for McCain, if he can upstage Obama in his pick by choosing a woman and an outsider, I think he'll have a great shot at winning this thing. The reps have their Maverick, now they need a rock star surprise V.P. that appeals to undecided voters and women. I have to hope his VP picking crew is seeing the opportunity here. (My personal choice would be Sarah Palin from Alaska.) Considering his maverick style and how well the new McCain campaign is going, I'd bet they'll surprise everyone. This could be the turning point in this race. In picking Biden, Obama has laid the ground work, now all McCain has to do follow through.

It is times like this, witnessing such an impressive culmination of naivette, ignorance and irrational hatred that I realize that too often I take for granted both the divine inspiration of the founders in the electoral college and the fact that I am blessed enough to live in a red state that is not in play. Thanks for taking the time to remind me for what I am grateful, jensieblue. I can relax and enjoy the juxtaposition of your words to the sublime fury of the tropical storm outside that will ultimately do no real damage.

I agree with what you say, but not my point at all. Cheney has always been called the real president behind the scenes because W was too inexperienced. Seems like Obama/Biden is a mirror image of this scenario. I have nothing against Obama picking Biden. Obama claimed numerous times that he wants to change the way Washington works and that he is not a Washington insider (like Hillary Clinton, John McCain). Choosing to run with a 35 year career Senator and former 2 time presidential candidate is not exactly a means to change the way Washington works. Obama has articulately communicated his campaign is all about hope and change. Tim Kaine (Gov. of VA) is not a Washington insider. He has never served in Washington. All I'm saying is that if Obama wanted to remain consistent with his articulate, belabored message, someone such as Kaine would have been an on-point, consistent choice. Biden muddles this message to say the least, and he has many, many ready-made sound bites that will hurt this campaign.

I am thrilled and happy, hopefully Biden will soon begin the second wave of assault on John McCain, and we can focus on the weakness of the honorable, but forgetful and uninspired old man that the Repub have put up....i.e., John McCain's rhetoric for claiming POTUS will consist of "nothing more than a noun, a verb and POW."
Mitt will be the Repubs only oppty. to equalize things now.

I think Biden is a very pragmatic choice: if one is to effect change, then two things are required: vision, then strategy...Obama brings the vision--Biden the strategy.

I'm not sure that a female outsider would help McCain. It's been repeatedly implied that whoever McCain picks has a better than average shot at ending up in the number one spot. A female outsider in that spot would seem to make a lot of people nervous. :idontno: I would think the Obama camp would capitalize on that big time.

The first job of the VP candidate is to be qualified to be President if some thing terrible happens. Biden was the most qualified of all the available choices including Sen Clinton. The problem with Biden is that he has diarhea of the mouth. I am sure he will say more than his share of stupid things during the campaign. The conventional thinking is McCain needs to pick someone of stature and someone who will appeal to the base. I don't think Romney is that choice because he is too much of a recent convert to conservative republican dogma to be a credible . He is subject to the flip flop charge in spades. I want an exciting pick like Condi Rice or Mike Bloomberg or Joe Lieberman. McCain needs to shake things up and pick someone who will excite the electorate at large. The base has no choice but to go with McCain, to do otherwise would be just plain dumb. " Cutting off your nose to spite your face " kind of dumbness !!!!
Biden was a great choice. An inspirational idealist at the top of the ticket, with a pragmatic experienced pro as the aggressive campaigner.

I think all the points made here are good. It's going to be an interesting to see who McCain picks. Romeny looks pretty good overall. He did come in second in the race, and picked up a couple important states, especially Michigan, with those tasty 17 electoral votes. He could help swing the final tally in McCain's favor. I don't think Biden will have a major effect on any specific swing state, but he will pull independent blue collar votes in. Romney might be able to counter act that thanks to his populism.
I'm biased as I do not like the man, I think he panders too much, but I suppose I could hold my nose and push the button next to his name.
I wonder if he has any skeletons in his closet? Being Mormon, he's probably pretty squeeky clean, but who knows. Some times the cleanest looking have the darkest secrets.

Classic Biden.
Messiah & Genius, Perfect Together [Andy McCarthy]
From Scott Johnson's excellent post at Powerline this morning on Senator Biden:
San Diego Union-Tribune blogger Chris Reed recalls Biden's 1988 response in Claremont, New Hampshire to a question about his law school record from a man identified only as ''Frank.'' Biden looked at his questioner and said: ''I think I have a much higher I.Q. than you do.''
Biden of course couldn't leave it at that. He is not known for his concision or care with the facts. He added that he ''went to law school on a full academic scholarship — the only one in my class to have a full academic scholarship.'' He also said that he ''ended up in the top half'' of his class and won a prize in an international moot court competition. Biden still wasn't done. In college, Biden said, he was ''the outstanding student in the political science department'' and ''graduated with three degrees from college.''
Reed then turns to Biden's subsequent statement on this exchange. At Syracuse College of Law, Biden graduated 76th in a class of 85. He acknowledged: ''I did not graduate in the top half of my class at law school and my recollection of this was inacurate.'' Just a slip of memory.
As for receiving three degrees, Biden conceded: ''I graduated from the University of Delaware with a double major in history and political science. My reference to degrees at the Claremont event was intended to refer to these majors — I said 'three' and should have said 'two.''' His arithmetic was off.
As for his undergraduate preeminence in the political science department — well, that was somebody else. But one of his professors thought he fit the bill. ''With regard to my being the outstanding student in the political science department,'' the statement went on. ''My name was put up for that award by David Ingersoll, who is still at the University of Delaware.'' Professor Ingersoll had it right!
As for his claim that he went to school on full academic scholarship: ''My recollection is — and I'd have to confirm this — but I don't recall paying any money to go to law school.'' Reed cites a Newsweek report that Biden had gone to Syracuse ''on half scholarship based on financial need.''

I am just SO happy he didn't pick Hillary!
I read in the National Journal the other day they ranked members of Congress by ideology I'd like to pointed to the fact that Barack Obama was ranked the most liberal senator in 2007. It’s worth noting alos, that Joe Biden was ranked third most liberal.
Sheldon Whitehouse, the freshman senator from Rhode Island, was second; and Bernie Sanders, the self-described socialist independent from Vermont, placed fourth, after both Obama and Biden. Great company......
Our nation is strong and mostly conservative if you look at the "Battleground Poll's" results I've been tracking since 2000. The fact is the split is holding pretty firm at about 62% Conservative, 36% Liberal and 2% is really all that the Undecided every amounts to.....
Read everything you can, not just what you see in the NY Times or on all the liberal networks. Seek the truth, find the truth, embrace the truth. Don't buy the same old stories the Dems have been working with for over 50 years.
Look what liberalism has done for all our major cities..... and all the people they have supposedly helped. It's a shame. I travel almost every week....... I see Newark, NJ.......NYC, Boston,...... Memphis....... Detroit......St Louis ........ LA etc.
Sad, so sad............
