Walton County Officials Declare State of Emergency
to Prepare for Tropical Storm Fay
24-hour citizen hotlines to open at 6:00 p.m.
892-8392, 892-8394

DeFuniak Springs, Fla – Walton County Commission Chair, Larry Jones, and the Walton County Emergency Response Division declared a State of Emergency at 9:00 a.m. for Walton County to prepare for Tropical Storm Fay.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is now operating at a Level 3 activation. Emergency Response Division director, Ed Baltzley, says this level of activation simply means key emergency personnel know to work with their departments throughout the day to make sure they are ready for any problems which this storm may bring to the area. “Fay poses a flooding threat to our county more than a wind threat,” he says. “Our Public Works division, along with law enforcement leaders, health department, emergency operations center and transportation officials are all working with their departments right now to make sure Walton County citizens will have necessary services and protection to weather this storm.”

County emergency officials will raise the level of activation to a Level 2 at 6:00 p.m., meaning key emergency personnel will gather back together at the Emergency Operations Center in DeFuniak Springs to monitor the impact of Tropical Storm Fay. The EOC will function as a command post at the Level 2 activation where leaders of the various divisions and departments will collaborate and make safety decisions on road closures, ambulance and medical services and collectively respond to emergencies as road and river flooding.

Citizens needing information about the storms impact on Walton County can call the 24 hour citizens’ hotline at 892-8392 and 892-8394 beginning at 6:00 p.m. when the Level 2 activation at the EOC is declared.

Voluntary Evacuation in Effect
for Walton County Campers

DeFuniak Springs, Fla – Walton County emergency officials have declared a voluntary evacuation for all campers throughout Walton County. Officials warn that Tropical Storm Fay could threaten low-lying areas with flooding and could affect many campsites along rivers, creeks and bays.

“This is a good time for people in tents, RVs and campers to evacuate from the area to avoid flooding problems” says Walton County Emergency Response Division Director Ed Baltzley. “The heaviest rains this storm may bring will not impact our region for several hours, so campers have time to pack their belongings and move to safer areas.” Mr. Baltzley says that Tropical Storm Fay has the potential to cause more flooding problems for Walton County than wind.

Citizens and visitors needing further information about the storm’s impact on Walton County can call the 24 hour citizens’ hotline at 892-8392 and 892-8394 beginning at 6:00 p.m. when the Level 2 activation at the Emergency Operations Center is declared.
