Please help!We are in a rental and there is a huge rattlesnake that has come out from under the house. Needless to say I can't send the kids out to the pool. its pretty big and having problems going back under the house. Will animal control come get him? I do not have any #'s to call . If someone can give me a quick suggestion on removal I would be most grateful and could go back to making dinner and enjoying myself.

I could not find any such number so I guess there is not one. I called the sheriff's dept. and they said they will send someone out. I hope it is quick!

Where do you stay? I have yet to see any big rattlesnakes here, but I am always on the lookout.

Animal control only does dogs and cats.
There are huge rattle snakes here. I have dogs and I have to kill at least one a week.
Just take a shovel beat it in the head. The head is the most sensitve spot. Or take our your gun and shoot it.
Ok I know I am going to hear it from the people who do not believe in killing snakes. BUT if you have ever had to have a dog die from a snake bite you might see it differently.
Good Luck!
Oh by the way until I got brave enough to kill them myself, I would just call the neighbor!

I don't believe in brandishing guns out your truck window at snakes who are riding bicycles in compliance with the laws of the road.

However, if the clearly does not have the right of way, I support your decision to hit it on the head with a shovel if Kurt isn't available to mediate.

A nice man from the sheriiff's dept. came promptly and informed me he doesn't usually do snakes with a chuckle. It was definitely a rattlesnake about 5 - 5.5 ft. long. It obviously had just eaten. He was scooped up in the pool net and set on the other side of the fence. He was mad and I hope he decided to go on down the road. We could hear him for about 30 minutes. My boys have never seen one other than in the zoo.

I have seen and pictured so, so many snakes here since moving to Seagrove January 30th, but have yet to see a big Eastern Diamondback. In fact, I searched today. Wish I had gotten to this thread sooner. Glad no one was hurt, including the snake. But I would have at least transported the snake deep into the woods for you.

a shovel is definitely the way to take care of this situation. That's what my dad always used. ;-) And yes, he hit the snake's head with it too.

(My snake nightmares will continue tonight I'm afraid... )

It was a diamondback. That's why it shocked me that it was out sunning by the pool. I was just glad my boys noticed it before they startled it.

It's very lucky that you had a pool net, and luckier still that he fit in it. And even more so that Mr. Snake had recently eaten and was probably sluggish. Otherwise, I can't imagine anybody - deputy or not - putting a 5 ft rattlesnake in a net.

Johnrudy is really going to love me for this...but one of the images from my childhood that is forever branded into my memory involves a large diamondback that my grandmother killed with a handgun, which on the second shot jammed and burned her hand. Fortunately, about that time, the snake decided the first shot was enough and gave up the ghost...still coiled, mouth WIDE open, fangs exposed. Mama Mel had made a sudden movement when her Luger malfunctioned (no doubt there), and it was in the midst of striking at her when it dropped dead. :creepy:

I've already told y'all about the one that was crossing East Point Washington, head in the woods on one side and tail not out of the woods on the other side. Growing up down here, I have plenty of snake stories.

yes, now I have my feet up on the chair so nothing will slither across my feet.

I have the exact memory (not of Mama Mel and the gun) but of the snake crossing the road - - EXACTLY the same thing, head in grass while tail end on the other side of the road. Mr. JR still refuses to believe me and my dad is no longer here to support my story!

I grew up in rural Alabama. No much different. (Great childhood memories, no? :funn:)

oh how I hate snakesssssss.

Hey, Bob...didn't the rattlesnake originate in Texas?

That rattlesnake was there because there was enough food under the house to keep him fat and happy. I wonder how many mice will now be hanging out there? lol. I would have also relocated the snake had it been under my house. I don't mind the non-poisonous ones under my house, even though they startle me sometimes, but I always relocate the poisonous ones I find in my yard. My dogs are always trying to jump on the snakes and lizards around my back door, and I don't want them jumping on a rattlesnake.
