Those of us up north don't go back to school until after labor day so we LOVE coming to SoWal in August when it's quiet and we get to hang out in SoWal without traffic, crowds, etc. And the pool and ocean water is heavenly. So we'll be there very soon...

When do SoWaller kids go back to school?

Sowal schools start August 18th....Here is my plan: I'm stopping at Emerald Coast Middle and pushing the first one out the door, cruising past South Walton High and slowing down so the second one can jump out...THEN I AM GOING TO THE BEACH!!!!!!!!

For 13 years I have taken off the first day of school, got them out the door, cleaned the house until 10am to get rid of a summer's worth of kid funk and then headed out to do something fun on my own. Usually it is mountain biking but now that I am here I think me, a kayak, the beach, and maybe an adult beverage or two!!!!

I like the way you think! We should start a first day of school sowal beach outing.

"We should start a first day of school sowal beach outing."

If we all got together, I worry that no one would be in any condition to pick up the kids. We need to hire a nanny!!!!!

Remember to be kind to your teacher friends and support staff tomorrow. I know a number of staff that are starting work tomorrow, August 14, and have to get up around 5:30 a.m. after a summer of sleeping in and hanging out at the beach.

Plan it and let's go!

I think they have been working quite a bit for quite awhile this summer! The teachers that I know had kind of a short summer compared to what teachers use to have....:(

Keep the poor moms in your thoughts! I have to get up at 5:30 am too, and I haven't missed making PB sandwiches by 6 am AT ALL! The smell of PB that early makes me gag!

My oldest started kindergarten this week. The whole bus scenario didn't go very smoothly -- it failed to pick him up the first 2 mornings (he was a very dissappointed little boy when I told him I had to drive him to school - he's been waiting years to take bus!) and failed to bring him home the first afternoon (although he went on a long bus ride and then back to school -- so he was happy) The second day he finally made it home 1.5 hours after school let out and the school is less than 2 miles away! The third day went perfectly -- so we're hoping it smooth sailing from here on out. . . .

The best part is that he's decided that he doesn't want a stupid PB&J for lunch -- the cool thing to do is BUY school lunch!! I was going over the school menu for the next two weeks and he was declaring "I love nachos" "I love hamburgers" " I love spaghetti" to all these foods that he typically doesn't eat!! I'm hoping pear pressure works to our advantage in this area!!

JDarg, you are right. Didn't mean to imply they spent the entire time at beach. Hope they all got to relax some. Goodness knows they need some R&R to be ready to do a super job teaching. I know they also spent many hours planning and getting ready over the summer. I've was just feeling their pain of having to get up very early every day, when surely they got to sleep in some over the summer. I also feel your pain on having to make all those P&B sandwiches at 5:30 a.m.

Just came back from orientation at Bay Elem. Enrolled our 10 year old step son who will be here Sunday to start school Monday...a big change for him. The thirteen yo will be at Seaside Neighborhood School. It is sad that summer seems to be over, but I am ready to start a new chapter with 2 great kids!!!!!

My 24 yo son went with me to orientation and to enroll little D, we both went to Bay Elementary....what memories!

 Yeah, I gripe, but I wouldn't trade this job for anything. (Maybe I just need a little mask to wear to block the PB odor!)

The teachers have been hard at work! I saw classrooms at Bay and SWHS today- and they all looked great! I wish I could be a kid again!

Mine went back on the 7th, and they do get that long weekend in October. Grades so far 90 in History, 100 in English. :clap:That's usually how it starts though, then he get's lazy. Hopefully, he will keep it up though. He said he was, we shall see. Enjoy the last few days mom of those starting next week!
