Kayaking in Maine would be absolutely beautiful!!! But, I must caution you that in the two times that we had lived there for a total of five years I only once stuck a toe into the water. It is freaking cold even in August! Our kids would stay in the water until they were blue and loved it but I was never that brave. I would suggest a bigger boat where you could also go inside. A whale tour would be great.

Wetsuits and sprayskirts up there, no sit-on-tops.

I've wanted to to the windjammer cruise for several years.

You can say that again. We summered up in Maine when I was growing up and that water would turn you blue in two seconds flat. When I was a kid I could swim in it but now? not on your life!
Skunky, I haven't personally kayaked up in Maine but my sister lives there (in Bangor, just south of Mt. Desert Island) and she would tell you that though the coast is indeed beautiful and enticing to explore by kayak, you ought not to do it without someone experienced because of the very challenges that the article pointed out. The Maine coast does not mess around.

I've wanted to to the windjammer cruise for several years.
During the Labor Day weekend there is a wonderful Windjammer Festival out of Rockport/Camden. You are able to go out for a whole cruise; go out for a day cruise; an afternoon; or a coupla hours. It is a wonderful way to end the summer. And there is music and food and all the other festival stuff at the habour and it is not hot and humid:clap: It is one of my favorite places/times.
Another great place is BaySide...a community just south of Belfast. It is very similar to Seaside...Victorian houses, but it is real--some of the houses have been there a long time. Another great place to stay.
I love Maine. If I did not live in SoWal I would live in Maine; and I am trying to figure out a way to live in Maine inthe summer and SoWal the rest of the year--now, that would be heaven!
