Weather gurus:
Do hurricanes always roll in from the coast of Africa or can they just develop out of nowhere in the Gulf?
The reason I ask is that I don't watch too much Weather Channel, but have been looking at the radar every day since I've gotten rain every day this week. There's a big blob of rain out there and it has been joined by another big blob just south of N.O. and it seems like it has a little rotation...:idontno:

I believe you can look up the paths of the history of hurricanes on NOAA or www.WeatherUnderground.com (http://www.WeatherUnderground.com) . I'm pretty sure that we've had plenty of storms which didn't originate on the African Coast.

They can form anywhere with warm water of 80 degrees or higher. This is a perfect example as Invest 91 is now Tropical Storm Edouard

Just sent this to PawPaw. Steven, Molly and I were supposed to drive to see him today. Had to change plans. Sure wish I was down there, now. :(
I am a weather NUT!! Wanted to be a meteorologist when I was gowing up but you know how life goes. Look for oil and gas to spike on the market tomorrow. We are heading down to our fav place, SOWAL on Sept 5, hope all will stay well the rest of the year in the Gulf.

So is my Daddy, PawPaw! He always knows the weather report where I am, no matter where I am! I took Climatology in College jsut* so I could understand him. Really messed up my GPA! Have a great trip!

Both. Also they develop in the Caribbean and can get into the Gulf from there, depending on the steering currents.
You are a good observer. I noticed that rotation on Sat also. This storm formed from the remains of an old front that stalled over the Gulf.
There is a whole lot of information on the internet about hurricanes, very interesting topic.

Thanks, I'm thinking of contacting the Weather Channel to see if they need a stay at home Mom with too much time on her hands to do live remotes from her mobile home...:floor::floor:

Opal started over the Yucatan Peninsula and went straight north until it hit us. These really are the more dangerous storms since they form fast and catch everyone by surprise.

Due to the lack of strength in the storm so far. It could always change over night.

Best idea in a long time. Make those TWC fear mongers go absolutely bat sheet crazy, like they try to do to us!

I think it's funny that you were asking for weather gurus and turned out to be quite the guru yourself.:clap:
