Over the last couple of weeks we have caught a few Spanish Mackerel from our kayaks out in the Gulf off Inlet Beach, but mostly we have been catching large Remoras in the two to three feet range. Although my fish book says that they only grow to three feet, one was closer to four feet. Two of us are typically catching 10 to 12 in a few hours. They are fun to catch as they fight hard, but we quickly release them since they make a mess in the yak.

Is this a fairly common occurrence in the area to catch mostly Remoras in 30 to 40 ft. of water? They have been caught on both dead shrimp and cigar minnows.

My bunch caught one in the Bay earlier in the week. About 12 inches long. I thought it was unusual and I have fished the bay for years, but not recently.

Bernster:

The last two weeks have been off the charts. Our kayak fishing customer have caught many Spanish, Kings, Bonita, and even Cobia. When the Remoras get to be a problem, switch to artificial baits such as a Clarkspoon, Mackereal Tree, or plug. The Remoras don't seem to like the artificial baits. Those nasty remoras seem to be attracted to the smell.

There are lots of Kings and Spanish just past the second sand bar.
