Okay I know I am jumping off into unchartered territory here, and my thoughts do not hold a lot of sway with most Democrats. But I, personally, wish to encourage you to get involved. The only way to get this country and county going into a direction that we all feel is good requires good, honest, open debate. We MUST have participation by everyone no matter what their opinion. I really believe that at a local level, we all agree much more than we disagree.
I was very disappointed in the participation in the local precinct races. We had several of our more active members on the Republican side not file, and last time I looked, only one Democrat is seeking what is, imho, one of the most important offices in politics. Precinct people set the tone for their respective parties across the nation. There are around 33 precincts in this county. That is a minimum of 66 positions that need filling. We had 27 persons file for positions, Democrats had 1. To sit and read the constant criticisms about government leadership and where we are heading and then to see such little interest, because we are basically a self-governing country, is a bit sad.
It is time for all of us to come together, express our ideas, come to some sort of an agreement, and fix this thing that has such an insidious control over all of our lives.
Now I am going to go back to work.

I, too, am unhappy that we did not have more Democrats file for the county precinct positions (there are now 34 precincts in Walton County). I, too, am disappointed that we have only one viable candidate running for local office. However, before you jump to the conclusion that Democrats are not involved or don't care about what is going on locally or nationally -- let me list a few things you may not know.
1. A new Walton County Democratic Women's Club has over 75 active members and recently helped complete a telephone voter verification for several precincts in Walton County in conjunction with the state party.
2. A Young Democrats of Northwest Florida has been formed out of South Walton.
3. Our website www.waltondemocrats.org (http://www.waltondemocrats.org) is getting about a few thousand hits a month -- all by word of mouth -- and Google!
4. We have a strong mailing list of committed Walton County Democrats who have attended coffees, primary parties, or asked to be placed on our list.
5. We are rebuilding a voter base who became disenchanted with the Democratic Party when George Bush became President and now are realizing the consequences of following that path.
6. We are quietly working at the grassroots level and will work to elect good people to local office - - many of the local posts should not be partisan to begin with. Some Democrats may even decide to switch parties for the primary.
I have great confidence in American voters. They seem to cut through the rhetoric and recognize when a shift in the balance of power needs to be made. I have hope that this electionyear will be one of those times. It IS too bad we don't have a Democratic candidate running for District 5 commissioner. It's a good year to be a Democrat!

Don't get me wrong. You guys are doing a great job of being involved. Your success with the Democratic Women's Club actually caused a Republican Women's group to form. And the work started on your website is awesome. Something we have needed to be done for a very long time. But look at what all is being done with just a few concerned individuals. Imagine what could be done if all that complained, got involved.
I look forward to working with you guys on getting this partisan issue resolved for the good of the county as a whole.

I forgot to pat local Democrats on the back for one more thing! For the first time, Walton County citizens can review the Walton County Board of Commissioners meetings from the comfort of their "computer screen." Local Democrat Ray Padgett videotapes each meeting and posts on the Walton County Democratic website. It's a real service to the community. Check it out! www.waltondemocrats.org (http://www.waltondemocrats.org)
Hey -- you can't blame me for tooting the Democratic horn. We've been under cover for eight years and it feels good to be part of the political process again!

The Northwest Florida Daily News this week stated less than a handful of Democrats at filed for races in Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton Counties. Why aren't more democrats running for office?

What time does this start?
The start time is 5, which I know is early for some people who work until 5. If you can't make it right at 5, just make it when you can. That's the great thing about WCYD, it's informal.
Another question I've heard asked -- what's the age limit? It's 18-45, but that is, again, soft because WCYD is informal. It's aim is to do grassroots organizing in a fun way, with an emphasis on volunteering and involvement as opposed to pure fundraising. If you're 47 but want to do some canvassing, you'll be very welcome.

I am assuming that there is some sort of restriction on which Presidential candidate you could canvass for?:floor:

Let me know when you get back in town. DFS is a small community, I love having lunch with people that do not frequent the area. Keeps people guessing what I am up to next. There is another burger place we can try too. Very good food.
