The Zonning Board of Adjustments will meet this Thursday, June 26, at 6:00 PM at South Walton Annex to approve or deny a development order for Azland Mining/ Lee Perry to operate a sand and clay mine on Rock Hill Road. This heavy industrial type activity can now be permitted in Walton County on any piece of property with agricultural zoning. This allows mines to operate essentially in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Mining operations are very difficult to regulate, especially when the rules for operating them are as vague and poorly conceived as they are in Walton County. Many residents of Rock Hill Road area have joined together to encourage the county to not permit any mining operations until critical safety and environmental issues can be understood and carefully regulated. The long term, potentially irreversible environmental damage from mining will affect all of us, not just Rock Hill Road. Lee Perry's proposed mine sits right on top of the aquifer supplying drinking water for South Walton. The county has begun to realize how out of control this problem has become and we really feel they need to do a lot more research before allowing any new mining activity. Please support this effort by attending the meeting on June 26.

So, not only are we building an airport when airlines all over the country are cutting services to smaller markets and as SinginChicken points out in another thread--not an International Airport-- we are also allowing a borrow pit/mine to be put over the main water source...a borrow pit to get sand/clay for the airport...
but that's okay, it's Vision for The Beach:bang:

The Vision for the Beach must be nearsightedness, or maybe legally blind. Initial reports on the proposed Azland mine suggest that the dirt there is not of acceptable quality for airports or roads, so one really has to wonder what this guy is planning. Some of us "Rockhillbillies" suspect landfill to be a more likely long range business goal. Maybe legal or maybe illegal, which is much more popular in Walton County.

Isn't Lee Perry running for something?

Don't think so. Ran as a Repub BCC candidate for Dist. 5 last time around, which Cindy Meadows won.

Ahhh! Don't get me wrong. In the FAA's definition of an international airport, it will be. On site Customs provided.
What I'm saying is you won't see many, if any, scheduled carrier flights that are international.

thanks. I understood what you meant...didn't mean to confuse your words. I think what most people believe when they hear "International Airport" is that one can fly from NW Florida to some point outside the US or those outside can fly to NW Fl...etc. w/out going thru Miami, Atlanta....

What exactly does a committee person do? :idontno:
Is it an important enough position that it would be a bad idea for him to do this proposed mining during an election year?
As far as the new airport, they are giving odds on which major carrier will fail soon, and I've been to some "international" airports that made the old VPS look hi-tech so I don't expect a stampede of carriers offering a wide variety of cheap flights.

Lee Perry is running for Republican State Committeeman along with Lane Rees and Randy Henning. First time I have ever seen a three way run in that race. I really can not remember for sure ever seeing that being a contested race in the past.

He would be one of the three people from Walton County who sit on the Republican State Executive Committee. They pick the Chairman and other party leaders for Florida and set policy for how the party functions.

Lee Perry's proposed mining operation is all wrong and should not be approved. Please attend the meeting on Thursday at 6:00 PM at the South Walton courthouse. Perry will be questioned on a number of relevant points. It could be interesting to some of you folks. Thanks for your help.
