View Full Version : Air conditioning the world

I just have to rant about something that really bugs me. I've noticed it before at Destin Commons and then observed it yesterday at Pier Park. There are numerous stores that leave their doors wide open (in our record heat), I'm sure to tempt shoppers in, and just have their ice cold air conditioning flowing out. I intend to start saying something to the clerks in the stores and asking that they close the doors. I'm sure they'll look at me like I have two heads, but I find it to be an appalling waste of energy and I don't think I can just walk by anymore.
It ranks right up there with the wasteful watering of the streets and sidewalks in mid-day for me!
.
...Good for you!

Air conditioning the world and having the AC set at meat locker temps are pet peeves of mine.

On a really hot day, after trudging across a full parking lot, I always found that blast of cold air after entering the store to be refreshing. I haven't been out of town shopping in a while and that is insane for them to leave the doors open.
They better be glad they didn't live with my granny. ....................."Young'un, what do you think you are doing? Air conditioning the neighborhood. You wasn't raised in no barn. Now, shut that door. Electricity don't grow on trees." :floor:

At my home - "You weren't born in a barn!"
I still have been known to repeat that phrase on occasion.

Could you also drive by my rental every day and ask the guests to close the balcony doors or turn off the AC? Nothing worse than watching other people waste energy and then having to pay for it ourselves.

Those are the same people that don't seem to understand the concept of a frozen air conditioner. They usually wait until 10pm on a holiday night to call and complain. My old company would charge them to send out the a/c guy with a hair dryer, er, hot air gun.

The same people Mr. Sunspot gets the calls from every summer:
Tourist: "The fridge isn't working in this unit."
Mr. Sunspot: "The fridge is working, Mr. Tourist, You just can't put 4 cases of hot drinks in a refrigerator and expect them to be cold in an hour...."
Mr. Sunspot after leaving the unit: :bang::bang::bang:

Yes, I love that one. Those were usually the people that bought there groceries before checking in or making sure the unit was ready.

I've noticed that weekly renters like to set the air at 60, turn the fridge and freezer all the way up, put the ceiling fans on high and open all the doors. They also enjoy leaving all the lights and tvs on while they're not there.
I forgot something ...
and the pool light on over night to attract all the bugs!

That's all very true. In fact I once had a renter ask why the rates kept going up. I explained all of this and they shot back that they were renting the unit and would do what they felt. I clicked the little do not rent box on her account.
I'm curious if renters were concious about turning things off not abusing the utilities if owners would lower their rates?

I doubt that would make a difference...when people go on vacation,
they really go on vacation.
Responsibilities during vacation: have fun, forget the rest!

Which is why you should never buy a rental car....or, as the tourists think of them, "experimental" car.

Knowing where mister mouse and I took the rental car when we were driving around in the California desert has pretty much guaranteed we'd never buy a used rental car.

I'll admit it, had a rental once and always wondered what would happen if I threw an automatic into park at 30mph. I doubt that transmission will ever be the same.

Had one of those little Cadillac thingys that are on the market now. It was a loaner when my SUV was in the shop and I had three dogs in the back seat and took it to my brothers property (aka "the pit") and tried to get it stuck. Never got stuck...I was impressed. Then I had my son take it back and pick up my car. The dealer was glad to know it didn't get stuck.

I had a rental car in Tallahassee after an accident when I was 16. Yes back then if you were under 25 you could only get one to replace a car in the shop. I was with some friends and we had been discovering that abilities of the almost brand new Ford Taurus we had been gifted with. The usual stuff see how it accelerated, braked, and handled in general. We were pulling into a parking space at the mall and I put it into park a little too early. It was like flash bulbs went in the car as we all thought the exact same thing. We decided to give it a try and determined (thru no scientific means) that 30mph would be a great speed to test this out at.
We left the mall and found a secluded street. At 30 mph I deftly moved the car into park. WHAM! HONK! clickety clickety clickety (that went on for a while). It threw us all forward I hit the horn. The clicking noise is what I assume was the parking pin being worn down. We all thought it was hysterical, but because the car would still roll in park we decided that we should probably just go to the mall. I had to use the emergency brake the remainder of the time due to a sudden lack of the P working.
If the statute of limitations isn't up this was entirely fictional and hear say.

Guess that explains why car rental rates keep going up too. ;-)
