View Full Version : Associated Press declares Obama Clinches Nomination

At 1:40EST, The AP has declared Obama the presumptive nominee by reaching the magic number of 2118 delegates. The AP is the oldest news organization in America. It is official !!!

MSNBC says that he has it based on publicly pledged delegates and what he's won. They aren't counting today's primaries in that total so he can get more.
Hillary is still not going to concede that he is the nom though.

Now they're saying on CNN that Hillary is open to being on the ticket with Barack.
Well, if people want change, this is it -- the chance for a double-first, a black man and a white woman, presumably the dream team for the Democrats over the Republicans.
Ain't this just a humdinger!

Roses are red, violets are blue, and we've got some proof, that Hill's campaign is through.
We found out Whispering Pines of Chappaqua -- the local flower shop -- has been delivering a bunch of arrangements to the Clinton house -- some for Hil, some for Bill and some for both.
So why do people send flowers? A wedding -- no. Funeral -- sort of. The end of a Presidential campaign -- bingo.

Voting for someone just because they are a woman is incredibly wrong and the opposite of the equality that women have been fighting for.
This is an election for a rather important job - we are voting for a leader at a crucial time in history. Base your vote on criteria more substantial than the future answer to a trivia question.

I think Ed Rendel would be a great running mate for Obama. He is the gov of Pennsylvania,a big blue collar state bordering Ohio. Rendel is immensely popular Gov and he is Jewish. Obama needs the Jewish vote if he is going to win Florida and some of the swing states. Obama is viewed very suspiciously as not a very dependable friend of Israel.

Another good choice for Obama would be Bill Richardson. He helped Obama over the hump and is excellent on foreign affairs.
But here are some other vp choices:
• HILLARY CLINTON. Takes care of fans of "women with power" right off the bat.
• MIKE HUCKABEE. Would secure the votes of formerly fat people who play electric guitar and don't believe in evolution.
• CHERIE BERRY. North Carolina's Labor Secretary would balance the ticket in three ways: She's a woman, she's a Republican, and she's a slave to corporate interests at the expense of the public good. Oops, maybe not a good choice after all.
• MICKEY MOUSE. Incredibly popular, would help lock down the Florida vote, and his ears would match his running mate's.
• GEORGE W. BUSH. The most ironclad case of "assassination insurance" in VP-picking history.
• MITT ROMNEY. Guarantees support from the Obscenely Wealthy Corporate Automaton community.
• CAROLINE KENNEDY. All the talk about Obama's "Kennedyesque mystique" would be kicked up to mind-boggling levels that even our McCain-worshipping press would have to notice.
• WILLIE NELSON. A genius pick that nails Texans, pot-smokers and senior voters at the same time.
• ELIOT SPITZER. Now and then a First Lady can start to get on a president's nerves. Eliot can help.
• AL GORE. He's already been there, done that. Plus, he'll lock down the dirt-worshipping tree hugger vote.
• DALE EARNHARDT JR. Need to suck up to the white working class? You got it. Could help reverse 40 years of GOP dominance in the South.
• ELLEN DEGENERES. A draw for voters who watch talk shows, dance at the drop of a hat, cry over dogs, support gay rights and/or want a woman on the ticket but not someone Michelle Obama would have to worry about.
• GEORGE MCGOVERN. If a Republican debacle is as certain as some pundits believe, why not go ahead and really rub it in?
• JANE FONDA. Ditto.
• LARRY KING. Picking someone even older than John McCain -- heck, older than McCain's mother -- would instantly deal with the "inexperienced" and "too young" question.
• BRITNEY SPEARS. No matter what the right-wing press digs up on Obama, his youthful personal choices will always seem wise compared to hers.
• THE DALAI LAMA. Yeah yeah, he's not American, but for God's sake, it's the Dalai friggin' Lama here! It's a shoo-in -- go for it!
• CHAKA KHAN. Just so Obama can get the band to play "Baby Got Back" on the final night of the convention.
• AL SHARPTON. **** 'em if they can't take a joke.
• KATIE COURIC. Simultaneously secures the older TV-news-watching crowd and moves the ticket away from public perception as too "intellectual," or even smart.
• ANGELINA JOLIE. Could get Congress to revise the whole concept of "No child left behind."
• MICHAEL SCHIAVO. What better way to remind voters of what happens when you let Republicans run the government?
• TIM RUSSERT. Little-known secret: Russert's giant head is actually a storage locker that could be used as hiding place for the President in case of assassination attempt.
• DAVID BECKHAM. Two words: Soccer moms.

I wanted to share the email I received --
I'm about to take the stage in St. Paul and announce that we have won the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
It's been a long journey, and we should all pause to thank Hillary Clinton, who made history in this campaign. Our party and our country are better off because of her.
I want to make sure you understand what's ahead of us. Earlier tonight, John McCain outlined a vision of America that's very different from ours -- a vision that continues the disastrous policies of George W. Bush.
But this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past and bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for the country we love.
It's going to take hard work, but thanks to you and millions of other volunteers, no one has ever been more prepared for such a challenge.
Thank you for everything you've done to get us here. Let's keep making history.

I don't see a dead girl or live boy in Obama's future, and even if there was, it is easy to paint it as a vast right wing conspriracy. A crazy Southern conservative who hates the black man is much more effective, and it consolidates more power for the party. I don't think it will happen, but I think it is much more likely to happen with a Clinton as VP.

The angry boomer women feel the same way about how far they have come and want to see a woman in the top spot. Why stop there? Seminole Indians were at the bottom of the social ladder and have come so far. They need to see one of their own in the top spot. If we are playing identity politics, at least play fair.

Agreed. But I'm one of those old fashioned Southerners that judges candidates by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin or the definition of their gender.

I was referring to a "historical marker" in American history for the Obama campaign..."politically" he has much more work to do in order to be the President of ALL Americans, for sure.

I know, and I agree. I was speaking more to Gypsea who thinks that a woman deserves a turn. I wish the GOP had a black candidate that was as appealing as Obama and as far right as he is far left. The difference is (not directed at you), I'd be supporting his policies, not his heritage, but I recognize such a candidate would be more appealing to the electorate.

Can't they have both?

I don't want a female president just because she's female, I want a great candidate/president who just happens to be female.

Why does it matter? Again, I agree that it is an interesting benchmark, but when someone pulls the curtain I wish that gender and race wouldn't enter the equation of the selection.

Sorry, just annoyed because there are some who constantly mention Hillary's gender as the reason to vote for her - and act as if you are spitting on Susan B. Anthony's grave if you are a female and don't support her.

Wouldn't that be wonderful!!! If only that could have been the case since the beginning of this republic ~ the faces would have looked different.

She was not my choice either. I was just stating that I have talked with some of those boomer women that have felt the same way about her (apparently they felt she was also qualified) as others have felt about Obama.

OK, I keep saying how terrified I am that Obama is going to choose Hillary for his veep, and Mr. Pod keeps telling me I'd better get used to it because it's absolutely going to happen. I've read the thread and all the possible names, but is Hillary as VP a foregone conclusion at this point?

I found this interesting - the other articles I read mainly talked about how the Clinton's have burned some bridges in their campaigning and that how she handles her defeat will determine her future. This one basically says she doesn't want to be VP and Obama doesn't want her to be and neither do the heavies.

I just can't see (or don't want to see) Obama choosing Hillary. Although close in policy, she really does represent politics as usual. I think he needs to choose someone with strong foreign policy background as this is where McCain will be trying to paint him into a corner.
"What does Hillary want?" ----- Well we all know we've taught our kids that no matter how hard you work, you can't always get what you want!
I will be disappointed if Obama chooses her.

I would not bet any money on her becoming his VP. With Hill you get Bill and I don't think any candidate would want that.

I'm standing behind my wager made back in January...she will not be on the ticket. I hear she is trying to push for a seat at the healthcare table, but unless she can get behind his plan, I hate to see her get a role in that battle. I'd love to see her as Senate Majority Leader...her tenacity would serve her well in that role.
If JDarg's mom loses the bet...I'm going to tell her, "Just donate it to the Obama campaign." :floor: About as likely to happen as wrobert ponying up cash for Obama.

I just realied that I have not expressed my congratulations to Obama and all of those who have supported him, especially those with sweat equity in the race, like Punzy. Anyhow, congratulations.
Sometimes we are behind winners, and sometimes we are behind losers. I'm in the group that was behind the person who won the last two terms. Now it's time for others to get their chance.

it would be wonderful, and in this election we have gotten so much closer to realizing the goal of selecting a leader based on policy, character and leadership ability. a white male would be my choice even now, if he were the best candidate. because really gender and skin color should not enter into our decision making. but unfortunately it does for at least half the country I would guess. so, we have a real possibility of our next prez being another white male, one who furthers the bush cause, extends the bush administration. and I don't feel its his gender or white skin that turns me off. no, its definitely not.
I won't go so far as to say she'd be involved in a real assassination (though she's already planted the idea in people's minds), but I could TOTALLY see her making him the fall guy for some political scandal - deliberately manufactured or otherwise!
