WASHINGTON — At the same time the Bush administration has been pushing for deep cuts in a popular crime-fighting program for states and cities, the White House has been fighting for approval of $603 million for the Iraqi police.

The White House earlier this year proposed slashing the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program, which helps local law enforcement officials deal with violent crime and serious offenders, to $200 million in the next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1 .

1) Don't get me started on how we are pouring money down the Iraqi rathole

2) Why wouldn't we pay for their police at the expense of our police force - we already pay Iraqis a salary to PATROL THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS!

The things that have suffered horrid neglect during the Bush years, would fill volumes. Everything that is "home based" has been trashed. Every program that relates to the health, safety and welfare of US citizens is going down the drain. I have yet to be convinved the financial drain to our economy has shown any benefit all all.

There's been some benefit. To the CEOs and shareholders of Halliburton, Blackwater, Exxon, etc.

They are still operating on Alfred Sloan's dictum, "What's good for GM is good for the country".

It's been revealing to survey the big shiny GA, TN, TX, and AL SUVs parked at the rental houses in Summer's Edge. 2 years ago, most of them sported a "W the President" sticker on the back window. The poverty-stricken, who hadn't been able to trade in their 2003 SUV yet, still had their "Bush-Cheney 2004" stickers.

This year, the "W" stickers are all gone. And not a McCain sticker in sight.
