The Swiss have apparently lost their chocolate eating, clockmaking minds
The story, unbelievable as it is, is here (http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/065njdoe.asp?pg=1).

Lost their minds? I have always agreed with this. Vegetarians think they're so nice for not killing "food with faces," but I've never seen a head of lettuce that was happy and free at the end of the salad course of a meal.
Vegetables are living creatures, too.

Then there is the not so silent scream of Miss Kitty when she opened the boxes of new lamps she had ordered and they were the wrong finish. :bang:

One of my nephews, who is now a vegetarian, asked this question when he was younger, "do plants feel pain when cut?" He was surprised to find out they responded physically to injury, but we explained that a tomato is still alive when it is taken from the vine, but will still turn red. That it was doubtful that if it knew that it would be eaten, it would revolt and turn blue.

Interesting bit of trivia -- if you Google the term "swiss ethics panel plants rights" all you get is right wing media references. If you Google it in German, nothing comes up. If someone speaks French, could you please see if you get anything if you search in French?
I'm sort of thinking this is some liberal bashing to whip up the base...get a little foaming at the mouth conservative reaction going....
With that said, I totally anthropomorphize trees, and get very sad when they are cut down.

:floor: Punzy, tomorrow, promise me you'll go find one of those bullfrogs to kiss, then go to the beach with a big picnic basket of veggies. This will ensure you can't hear the screaming when you cut or eat them over the surf. (don't forget the knife for the veggies)

Sorry, but I'm calling BS on this story....I went through 10 pages of Google results, and it all referred to this one article. Not one other source is reporting on the alleged Swiss panel findings.
And I can't go to the beach...I'm getting too much sun too early. Poor, poor, pitiful me. Doesn't your heart just bleed?

i wonder what the swiss vegetarians will be able to eat now? everything we eat was living at some point, not knowing it was giving itself up to the supposed greater good.

Interesting.
I google 'swiss "plant rights" and get 2,180 hits, with Yahoo News being the first one.
They reference the story from a French News Agency (Agence France-Presse) (http://www.afp.com). This story (http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5j9K2RZgh5rvw75akktscFWbcJJbg) seems to be the source. According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agence_France-Presse) they are the oldest news agency in the world and the primary news agency for the French government.
Google News (http://news.google.com/news?q=swiss%20federal%20ethics%20committee&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wn) has a lot of coverage on it, but some are blogs and most of the news sites don't have much attribution.

Thanks -- that story has a differnt tone from the first, and definitely doesn't seem half as wacko. Ahh, spin season is here....

Laugh all you want, but I distinctly remember the apple trees in the Wizard of Oz as being ill tempered. ;-)

Unfortunately though, even half-as-wacky in this case is still pretty wacked.

It may be helpful to remember that Switzerland is the same country whose army invaded Liechtenstein and had no idea they had done so until they were back in their own country. One can only wonder how many innocent, screaming plants the Swiss army stepped on as they stumbled around in the dark. :funn:

Ahh, spin season is here.... and it is not even in full swing. It is going to be a looooooong 7 months....
"the farmer inadvertently decapitated some flowers with his scythe...."
How do we know that the top of the flower is the head? Just because it is at the top? All the starting and "thinking" the flower must do happens under ground and not at the top at all. If the flower is the head, is the plant dead simply because the flower withered and fell off?
Think about it people...think about it...
