The Real Meaning of Peace

Author Unknown

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - in perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why?

"Because," explained the king, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."

The reason I posted this was because I had just heard the number of casualties in the war.
For some reason the story came to mind. It helped me and I had to share it.
I pray this war will end soon!!

It is my opinion that the real meaning of peace is to have malice toward no one.

This is an exercise that takes time to master, but if you can honestly hold no malice in your heart toward any person then I believe you will have peace in your life for that moment.

Peace is not permanent for anyone, but we constantly strive to get back to that island that is in our mind so that we may in someway understand what is important to us.

Everyone has a different idea of what peace is. To some it is money and prestige, to others it is being in the arms of someone we love, yet to others it is the ability to know that you honestly hold no hate in your heart toward anyone.

As a child I was told there is peace in the valley for me, yet how can one find peace in such a low place in their life? It is on the mountain top that most strive to be so why the valley? Shouldn't we strive to be with the masses on the mountain top and look God in the eye and say, we are here with you Lord.

But isn't it in that valley we find out who we are and what is indeed important to us? The ability to love unconditionally our fellow man.

But what do I know, I am just a simple person living in a place where I am surrounded by friends and family. How can I know peace when all the people I know love me.

I must endeavor to search out places that I am despised and hated and in my heart love them so that I am worthy to be loved myself.

What else can make us worthy of love but to love those who do not wish us God's speed. Was it not Christ who loved us when we hated him? Did he not carry our cross so that we could find peace?

Yet on that cross between heaven and earth he was hated and despised for nothing more than loving us. Yes, sometimes I believe I am so unworthy of peace that the only way to find it is to love those who wish me harm. But like I said, it is an exercise that I must carry out daily in order for me to find true peace.
