We are REALLY looking forward to our second trip to Seagrove arriving May 2. This is our first time coming this early in the season. Is the ocean warm enough to play and swim? What about the pools? The one at our condo is not heated but we are hoping that it is not too cold for a 3 year old to play in. (I have enjoyed getting some great tips on things to do and places to eat. Great website!)

The shallow water of the Coastal Dune Lakes warm up quickly. They should be just right for your three-year-old. In some places you can be swimming in the Gulf of Mexico and your children, supervised of course, can be splashing happily in the outfall of a Coastal Dune Lake.

Pay attention to the Flag system and don't go in if it's Red or Double Redd.

Does an eel qualify as a sea pest?
It was really cool and hung around for awhile until some kids scooped it up in a net and their dad used it for bait.

I love that they classify sharks as a "marine pest".
" honey ...would you get this pest (4 foot long shark) off my leg?'

eheh. I think the purple flags normally mean jellyfish. If sharks are about, they occasionally close the beach temporarily.

I'm with ya, Jodi... that terminology always makes me giggle... :shark:

IMO anything ABOVE me on the food chain doesn't qualify as a "pest"!!! http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/characters/character0104.gif (http://www.ranksurge.com)

Lakes have heated up rapidly. As of today, surface temps around 78F degrees with bottom temps varying a bit, but around 73F degrees at 6 - 7 ft depths.

Wow... more than 10 degrees warmer than my pool (which, granted, is in a very shaded area).

My pinky toe thermometer detected a noticeable increase in Gulf temps today. I'd guess the temp to be around 75F degrees along the beach -- very nice, very nice. swimming today would have felt great, and the Sun was out to heat things the air up to the upper 70's, today. The Gulf started off smooth as glass, but the winds kicked up out of the south west, pushing some waves around this afternoon. -- Green flags all day. Nice sand bars forming along the beaches.

Music to my ears, SJ. I'll be there tomorrow.

have fun and safe travels.
I'll put up a more detailed trip report later, but the gulf temp was nice. Problem was, red flags were out the whole time we were there. So I couldn't really swim like I normally do.

Water was nice saturday at Crab Island/the Bay. Chilly to the toe, comfortable if you employed the patented Scooterbug cannonball entry method.
I got several other people into the water too, including a 4 year old, so it's not just me who thought it was warm enough for swimming!
