Hi everyone,

My name is Elizabeth Laird and I have lived in Grayton the for past 6 years.
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction or has any ideas of how to get some sort of SLOW DOWN!CHILDREN & PETS at play signs, or SLOW DOWN DRUNK TOURIST!(joke) signs in the neighborhood. Or perhaps just a few more speed limit signs down some of the roads.
I even have a speed bump about ten yards down the street from my driveway and drivers are always bottoming out their cars there. They just don't pay attention.
After my friends, roommates, & I watched our cat get hit and killed by a bemused tourist in front of our house Easter Sunday, I have decided to make an effort to try to help amend this problem so no ones pets or God forbid, children get hit by these speed demons.
I just wish the tourists would understand this is a neighborhood, not a hwy or city street.
BTW- the car did not even stop to help/say they were sorry/nothing!
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for taking the time to read my thread!

Elizabeth

Baby, you probably can call the sheriiffs office and ask them to help you get the DOT to put some signs up for you down there. Deputy Chapman helped us get one up here in front of the Hibiscus because the cars just speed by and I always worry about our guests walking and riding bikes...not to mention all the children up and down the road.

I'm sorry that you had to witness your kitty being run over....call me if i can do anything at all!

HUGS!

I don't know that signs will help though. People are blowing past drivers on 30A, pulling into bike lanes in front of bikes and walkers, parking lots are like a duck shoot game.

I do know that in other areas we have been able to get the police to hang out in a certain area for a few days which slowed people down but here, the people who see the police today are not here tomorrow.

Sorry about your cat. Sad truth that it will always take tragedy to make people begin to take notice. I hope you have luck getting some signs. I saw something somewhere where people made paper signs or small maniquins (did I spell that right?) that looked like children and placed them within visible sight of such a crossing area and it slowed people down as they saw what they thought were children. They had to keep moving them around so that people didn't get too used to them to ignore them.

My wife and I ride bike alot and I can't believe I haven't been run over on multiple ocassions. For all of you out there that have had a too close call with some jerk who pulled his bike out into your supposed right of way and you had to slam on your brakes and drop your cell phone on the floor.....that was probably me. Some folks figure it is the bikers responsibility to stay out of their way. Please be careful because the law will not be on your side.
Just trying to do my part to help folks realize that we are all susceptible to not paying attention due to so many distractions in this beautiful county.

Speed limit signs won't help from what I've seen. I was pulled over in Grayton by a deputy for not wearing eye protection on my (motor) bike, even though I go faster on my bicycle than I go in Grayton on my motor bike. While pulled over, with blue lights flashing, a guy with a loud muffler, passed a friend of mine on a double yellow, probably going 45 in a 25, right in front of the deputy, who said, "I should probably go after that guy."

"Duh, really, you think?" was my silent thought to myself.

I like the sign I used to notice in Grayton, "Slow down, you are here." It made me realize that Grayton was supposed to be a sleepy little village, and that I needed to slow my pace when I made the turn off of 30A.

Did they ever take down the Pavement Ends sign?

I am so sorry to hear about your cat :( and I certainly agree everyone needs to slow down and observe the posted signs.

However I am not sure tourists are the only ones responsible. While visiting the area in February and being very careful to drive slowly in posted areas; I was constantly honked out, jestered at and yelled obscenities at by locals. Several times in the Grayton area.

I will assume they were locals as they were driving cars with Walton county tags, because when they blew past me and gave me the one finger wave I looked.

I think rude drivers come in all descriptions and based on the info shared in the business section some are local and business owners.

Please join and participate in the Grayton Beach Neighborhood Association, which is a group of Grayton beach home and property owners who try and help people with problems around the area. Our annual meeting is on April 19 at Point Washington Methodist church with a party following. Check it out at www.graytonbeachneighborhoodassociation.org

Thanks everyone for your responses. I know that the bad drivers aren't only tourists, but know that the one that hit my cat was.
I know that I will be more careful as should everyone.
Carmen, I will attend the Grayton homeowners meeting and express my concerns and present some ideas.
Thanks again everyone!

I guess you could always keep one of these spike strips handy for those speeders.

The peace and tranquility of Grayton is what most tourists seek. My experience as a wheelchair driver has been that the delivery trucks are the culprits. I know the drivers have to make a set amount of deliveries and loose pay and thier job if they don't. I think it is a mistake for Grayton to minimize the locale's authority over anyone who wants to do business within Grayton. You could encourage business to talk with their vendors. Have home owners stress to renters that Grayton residents do ot like speeders and if someone is identified as a speeder, they will have difficulty renting there again. I just encourage the Homeowners association to hold firm. You decide the quality of life in Grayton and those who do not respect ruls are not welcome.

In downtown Grayton, there are only three businesses, unless you count Pompano Jim's and Grayton Beach Services, so there are not many delivery trucks rushing around.

One of the neighborhoods here in my town had a couple of little "slow down" men they would put in different yards on different days. They were unofficial, and I don't know if they would alter anything for the kind of bat-turd who would run over your cat, but I always slowed down when I saw the slow down man...

I've seen a couple of privately owned signs similar to that which read, "slow down -- kids playing," and they do get my attention as a reminder.

I spoke with the duputy that patrols this area and told him about this thread. I also spoke with the owner of a particular Rental company on DeFuniak and we are going to consider two things. A sign in front of our building reminding folks about speeding (not sure what we are going to put on it yet) and also a reminder to our customers when they check in about pedestrians, kids, bikers and yes animals. I am sorry about your kitty cat being ran over. My dog was was just ran over 2 weeks ago. We had him 10 years.

We are having a sign made that will say "You have arrived, please slow down!!" We will put it on a sandwich board so it will be showing in both directions. The sandwich board that we had out there said "Realtor on Duty". That hasn't been doing much lately (Ha). We will also be adding an insert to our check-in packets that will say something liken that:wave: people, kids and bikers are everywhere so please observe speed limits.

Hope this helps.

I spoke with two additional deputy Sherrifs yesterday in the morning at the Grayton Store. Explained the whole situation to them again. Our new sign (should have this coming week), our new insert in check-in packets that we give our customers (this was supposed to be implemented this weekend, we have lots of check-ins this weekend), the spike strips I am going to lay down (just kidding), and re-iterated the importance of the correct speed especially in the Grayton area with so many kids, peds, and bikers. And course explained the tragedy of the kitten being hit on DeFuniak. What kind of sitiuation would our small little area be in if a child or an elderly person gets hit by a speeder if we continue to bring it to the officals attention. With all that said I know God is in control but he uses us as vessels. I spoke with them about the mobile speed detector on wheels (which works) and even a patrol car with a dummy in the front which would work probally just for one or two days.
Anyway, we had a great conversation and 10 seconds after I pulled into our parking lots, those two Duputies were pulling over a speeder. It was a vendors truck. We talked about vendors as well.

***Note to all on here and all who know folks in the area. Go the speed limit because I hope I am geting my point across to the Deputies. I know they are busy but we need to slow people down in Grayton, and yes that includes the locals. BTW, they said they would contact the guy in charge of patrol division for the little trailor that they have and maybe put it out there. They said the only have one. Maybe they could take some monies out of the big blue sign budget and buy more speed detecting trailors.***

If anyone wants to continue adding to this thread I will make sure the proper county officals get it. That may or may not help.

Could someone tell me why I can't get my spell check or any of the tools to works when I am posting something, please.

I am so sorry to hear about the kitty and the puppy. My family and I have visited Seagrove every summer for the last 20 years and love to come to Grayton a couple of times. We actually stayed in "Conch Out" once. We are always extra special careful when driving on 30A and any of the smaller side streets. Most of the time we are going too slow because we are looking at the houses :D I wish you luck with the situation and look forward to visiting again this summer.

It's not just Grayton.

I'd just like to say to the arse in the Black GMC Yukon (with a Florida save the Turtles tag) that tail gated me thru Dune Allen and then roared past me when I turned, I hope that one day someone will bestow the same discourtesy on you.

...we went down your road on Sunday and although we always seem to just naturally slow down because Grayton has that affect on us, I popped Mr. K and reminded him to slow slow it down! I hope this sign helps us all to remember we have arrived.

If that was you then slow down. I went the speed limit from Gulf Place to my home and you we constantly either 5 feet behind me or roaring up on me. In the future I will simply call the Sheriff's department.

I must apologize. I was having a tough day and was in a hurry. It is a little out of character of me but wanted to be honest with you.

By the way, saw the signs...they should make a difference.:clap:
