View Full Version : Winter storm warning!

 I cannot believe it, we have had no snow all winter other than a little light snow Tuesday that didn't amount to anything but the flakes ended up big and were pretty. Now we are under a winter storm warning starting around noon tomorrow ending at around midnight. We could see 3-5 inches of snow and it March. I cannot tell you when the last time was we had a snow in March. It was not that bad when I left work, a little cool but not cold. The temps had dropped to 38 around 5:00 p.m., now it is 35.
We are expecting periods of heavy rain overnight, and then a rain/snow mix in the morning changing over to all snow around noon. What a shocker. And I have to be at work at 8:00 in the morning. And the worst of it will be starting while I am at work. I hope our boss lets us head home if it starts getting bad. People here don't know how to drive in snow and we get more ice than snow. That system is in Arkansas right now.
I know Texas got snow as I have two cousins and a aunt in Texas and it was snowing in Fort Worth. DD and Miss Kitty, have you two seen any snow today? I have to make sure I get some pictures. Sounds like a good time also for a snowball fight if it does materialize. They are acting like we definitely are going to get it. Boy have we had weird weather this winter.

I have never seen these things come to pass when they predict them, I won't be rushing out to buy milk and bread.
But I have seen snow in Memphis in March. It snowed once on Good Friday. In 1968 it snowed 16 inches, hope that is not repeat record.

Hey Minnie, I agree, more times than not it doesn't materialize when they predict it. I already have bread and milk, but I didn't go out and buy it for that reason, I bought it because we were out. But that was a couple of days ago. I remember a snow in Knoxville back in 1964 when I was four, we got 14 inches that time. But I don't remember one back in 1968 that deep in Knoxville but we probably got it also if Memphis did.
Knoxville in general got several snows a year. Made for great sledding as our entire neighborhood was one hill after another. Our hill in front of our house was a great sledding hill. We were always out from early morning until near dark.
I still have to go to work tomorrow so I hope it holds off until after I get to work in the morning. But one thing about it, I think our boss will not be hesitant to let us go home early tomorrow if it does happen and we call her and tell her everything is covered with snow.
When she even thought we were going to get some snow last month she told us to get out of there and head home if it started getting bad. So we will remember that. I have a overpass and two hills to go up. I'm thinking the salt and sand trucks will be out overnight spreading that liquid mixture in anticipation of snow and anything worse.

strange how that can happen. A couple of miles can really make a difference. Of course you being such a hot Kitty, it probably melted before it got to the ground. ;-)

Now the winter storm warning here is in effect from tonight at midnight until tomorrow night at midnight. Great. They are saying the rain is going to be changing over to a wintry mix and then snow around lunchtime and make for tricky driving. Our boss will have to let us go early if the roads get bad. She doesn't have to worry about it as she lives on the Georgia coast.

The little bit of snow we had here started around 11:45 and stopped an hour later. It never got heavy. Started very fine and then increased a little bit in intensity and size and now has stopped. Nothing on the ground or roads. Cars are a little wet and the parking lot like it was rain. They initially said it would start out as rain so there may have been some rain in there also.
Whiteyfunn, my son lives in Clarksville, he said it started coming down there around 10:00 a.m. and they were saying it would start there later this afternoon. It has already covered everything there.
Our UPS driver told us that they are saying around 3:00 p.m. now for our heaviest part of the precip. Now I am beginning to wonder if we are going to get anything. So many times when they predict a good bit we get little or nothing.

Mr OL is thankfully off work tonight. he's been shoveling every couple of hours to stay on top of it. We don't have all that much snow yet but the wind is blowing fierce and it's starting to get colder. Like I said before, the roads are really bad. Many businesses are closing early too.

Hey CP, it is coming down here right now as we speak. I just love it. It is so beautiful. So smooth. The funny thing about it is it is just now covering our road out here. The road has been clear until the last hour. I have taken plenty of pictures earlier but I only have a limited area where I can take pictures and that is just around the house here. I will post some pics on here if possible in a little bit. The deeper snow is now though but it is dark and I could not get good pictures at dark.
Can you believe this is happening in March? We'll probably be back in the 70's by next weekend!

I know everyone that gets snow and snow and more snow, it is hard to love it. But we get it so rarely and this is a beautiful one, thick, fluffy flakes and in Memphis when it snows this much the city shuts down and not only is it beautiful; it is quiet.
Truly a special moment. On my way home from getting some gas, I took a bypass off the main route and went through one of my favorite areas of Memphis. One with a very old public golf course surrounded by old trees and stately mansions. I was the only one on the street except for one man walking his dog. The snow was just so heavy and quiet and the only sound was the wind in the trees. It was just beginning to get dark. The houses looked like small Christmas villages with all the lights aglow and everyone home safe and warm. It was breathtaking and reminded me of one of my favorite poems by Robert Frost.
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

LadyD, what about toilet paper? I'm always afraid I'm going to run out of toilet paper and toothpaste. But really, I live less than a mile from a Kroger and also a Walgreens, so I don't think this snow is going to cripple me that bad. I'll get some pictures first thing in the morning and post them. I'll avoid taking pictures of the 'yellow snow' my sweet dog has made this evening. Well, MKH, we are good always on the TP. We buy the bulk package at Sam's of their toilet paper. I think it is 36 rolls. And we buy the bulk package of Bounty paper towels there also. And the 4 box package of their Crest or Colgate toothpaste also. So we are good for now. The snow will probably be gone tomorrow afternoon. It is 28 degrees outside. First they were showing a low of around 22 in the morning, now they are showing 28 which is what it is now. But the snow continues and from what I've seen on weatherbug it could continue overnight also.

With all those supplies from Sam's, you should be good until Memorial Day! I just can't believe how much snow we have gotten. And so many times this winter they have predicted a chance of snow, only to get nothing more than rain. We definitely got it, this time.

I am going to measure it again in the morning after all is said and done. It is hard to see the mark on a small ruler. And I cannot find our big yardstick. :bang: But a tape measure will work good.
Well, I just read an updated forecast on our desktop weather site. Now our winter storm warning has been extended until 6:00 a.m. CST tomorrow morning with another inch of additional accumulation expected overnight with snowfall totals ending up 4-8 inches. Wow.
Lady, I know exactly what you mean about the snow being such a rare occurance that you wanna run out and take pics. Keep 'em coming!

My husband just called and he is on the way home from work. He is on the interstate and said it is pretty bad. The side roads will be worse. I hope he can make it up the long hill he has to come up near our house. I would hate to think I would have to drive down there and get him.

When we woke up to snow my husband told me...don't worry, we'll walk if we have too....Needless to say he immediately got the car and got me to the hospital and my daughter was quickly on the scene. Louisville is awful- about a foot at my mom's, and my brother has advised her to stay put (here, at my house, since her winter rental ended on Friday). Therefore, she is delaying her departure from SoWal one more day.
Tell Mama I'm glad she's staying put. I would worry about her--I don't want her to get hit by a truck... (And give that lovely lady a hug for me!)

Okay, so I was wrong about Mr OL shoveling 6 inches...it was actually 12. :lolabove: We've had record snowfall in the past 24 hours...16 inches and it's still snowing. Some churches have cancelled their services already. I'm sure plowing parking lots is a big issue. The following pics were take a while ago and like I said it's still snowing. Dylan went out to play and I lost him.LOL The kids don't remember the snow ever being so deep.

Jdarg, when we heard about the snow in Kentucky, we wondered if your Mom had gone back. Tell her  from us!

OL, I was thinking of you--NPR had a news feature from Columbus, Ohio, about all the snow that is piling up. I have to say that I was so grateful that you were getting it, not us (I know, my bad :(). We were on our way to the airport while listening to the radio. Philippa's going to England tonight and she's been looking forward to it so much! I'd have hated it if she were stuck on a runway for hours waiting for a plane to get de-iced. OR worse yet (as we heard on NPR) cancelled!! So thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking all our snow for us.

No problem.;-) I feel bad for everyone stuck at the airport. A Continental flight slid off the runway last night.
I hope Fyl has a wonderful time in merry old England!!

Great pics MKH. I got out around 8:30 and walked down our street to the next street and got some more pictures. Will have to post them later if I can get on here and do so. Hubby has been on the computer a lot. A lot of ours has melted. How about yours? We ended up with 7 inches of snow. It sure was pretty.
You got 7 inches and it's almost melted? Wow. It's supposed to be 9 degrees tonight so not chance of that for a while here.
Most churches have already cancelled morning services...not ours...we have a big event planned and I'm sure they're waiting til the last minute. Mr OL just called from the outerbelt..he said he was going about 30 mph and you couldn't even exit a normally very busy ramp...it was covered in several feet of snow with a car in the middle of it. It's a level 2 snow emergency but even if it was a level 3 he will still have to go to work...USPS essential personnel. Ya know the old saying..rain, sleet or snow...the mail never sleeps..or something like that. Even tho we didn't get our mail today.

OL, it is 36 here now. They were showing mid 30's for a high today. And the sun has been out since early this morning. Some areas that have a good deal of shade still have a good deal of snow around. The roads are clear here and on many yards half of the snow is gone. It is going to be around 52 tomorrow so the rest will be gone tomorrow. I am going to try to put some more pictures right now.

Thanks Minnie. Yep, our yard is more than half clear. :( More in the back of course. But the yard next door still has most of its snow in the front but the yard of the house on the other side of that one is clear. When you click on these pictures, does the background ones appear dark to you? I was able to click on each one last night and it not do that. Maybe it is something in the upgrade Kurt did obviously.

Record Snowfall
Season Total: 319”
Mt Mansfield Stake: 90”
I know they are thrilled at home in Stowe, VT, because like SoWal it's a tourism driven town. Fortunately for us it's a 4-season resort area.
I've been here since November, and so glad I missed this winter up north. When I called home last week it was -20 during the day! YIKES. I prefer the sun and "The Beach."
We've been all over Florida, but this is my first visit to SoWal. Boca Grande is the only other place we've chosen to return to (for the tarpon fishing.) But I think I've finally found my winter place here, it's feels very comfortable.
BTW that season total doesn't include the storm that dumped in Ohio that is currently moving into New England!

Today is the first time I've really been out since all the snow came. Most roads are still a mess but it is incredibly beautiful. The sun is shining today and it's so blinding you have to have sunglasses to go out.

Wow! Y'all will be going to school until July!

I didn't get a chance to see them! All of our snow is melted now, except in areas directly under the trees, where the sun hasn't hit yet. Today I was back out with just a windbreaker for a coat! And this week we are supposed to be in the high 60's!

Believe it or not it's only our 3rd snow day and they're allowed 5. I bet this will be the last. I don't think we used any snow days last year.

I left work early Friday and forgot to check in here before I left. Our senior partner got worried and sent people who have a longer drive home before rush hour. He included me, so I didn't argue. We had lots of lovely white stuff. I had 11.5 inches of snow, some spots of Louisville had between 12-14. We had thundersnow too, cool.
I shoveled out on Saturday, but it won't be here long we are going to see much warmer temps this week. Actually The roads were fine yesterday. Jenny you can send your mom home, it's all clear.

CP, it was sunny and around 55 yesterday. Was 63 today, going to be around 61 tomorrow and get this, 68 Wednesday. Now we just had snow Friday and Saturday on the ground and a lot of it and now look at the temps here. We have had some weird up and down temps here where weather is concerned this winter.
