Stinky's is great. Chicekn and sausage. No seafood in it. Goatfeathers has pretty good seafood gumbo. D&K...great. If memory serves, there were crawfish tails on top. I may be thinking of another establishment...

D&K or Blue Orleans. Gumbo should never include sausage/chicken and seafood...that isn't right. Seafood gumbo is just seafood and is sort of a New Orleans dish. Chicken and sausage is a country gumbo which is much cheaper(but no less delicious) that one might find in the wilds of Iota, Mamou or Gueydan.

Skunke, what is up with you not mixing seafood and beef? You don't eat steak and lobster, nor Shrimp and sausage gumbo. You are missing out. Sometimes sausage gumbo needs a bit of shrimp for flavor.

The purist is right! A seafood gumbo can have a bit of andouille or tasso, for balance, but seafood is seafood and meats is meats and never the twain should meet. And I am unanimous in this decision.

Hurricane Oyster Bar and Stinky's is the best Gunbo on 30A. (Restaurant that is). Hurricane's placed 3rd this year in the gumbo cook-off, but was the only seafood entry to place, the other two were chicken based. Stinky's does a great gumbo too, meat based.

Well, I will go a step further and say that one should never, ever, EVER put beef in gumbo! I could see a little sausage with the seafood, but really, country gumbo and coastal gumbos lean on locally available ingredients...same concept as the now trendy 'eating locally' concept.

I rarely make "seafood" gumbo. I often make "Shrimp and Sausage" gumbo. Funny thing about eating locally is that it is difficult to buy grade A Apples in NY and it is difficult to get Gulf Shrimp around the Gulf.

I think you can score them at Nick's market or Shrimper's. Something that was easy to take for granted back home were shrimpers who brought ice chests full of their catch to sell on the side of the road, fresh and cheap without a middle man.

Say What?
Check out either Goatfeathers (Seagrove or SRB) or Shrimpers (H98). Both have excellent local shrimp. I personally prefer Shrimpers because the owners/family are great people and the facility is always spotless. BTW they are currently on their traditional winter break and won't be open again until March.
During the Spring/Summer there have been Shrimp Boats parked at the Hwy331 bridge selling out of coolers. I've never tried them? Does anyone know anything about them?

Last I heard, the scenic corridor enforcement people ran them off. Didn't meet our scenic guidelines...:bang:

That's about right.....But they still allow the Bubba's in their beat up ole pick up and homemade camper park and fish along that stretch....
No harm was done to any of my fellow Bubba's in the construction of this statement.....;-)

Yet another change...enforcement of the system...that takes away who and what this area is all about.
Buying shrimp off the boat fresh is the best thing since sliced bread! I stop at least twice a week during season...another old favorite forced out!

Last I heard, the scenic corridor enforcement people ran them off. Didn't meet our scenic guidelines...:bang:They could park the boat on the north side of the bridge, because only the South side is considered a scenic corridor. The Cheri Anne, or what ever the name of that shrimp boat is parked up Lagrange Bayou. Someone told me that it belongs to the people who used to operate a restaurant in Freeport, on the south side of Hwy 20 -- The Corner Pocket or something like that. Judging by the two kids who I always saw selling the shrimp, I question if they were actually caught on that boat by those two teenagers, but they very well may be freshly caught.
I am aware of Shrimpers and Goatfeathers, and I, too, prefer Shrimpers, but I rarely make it down that far. The local Publix stores carry shrimp from Malaysia and Indonesia. Go figure. :bang: I know many local restaurants don't sell Gulf Shrimp, either. Glad to see Criolla's has Gulf Shrimp on their menu.

Parking on that stretch isn't against the law. However, Roadside vending without a license, on the scenic corridor is against the law.

It's a bit further west than many here like to venture, but Dewey Destin's has local shrimp in season, and rather apologetically sells Mobile Bay shrimp when they can't get the really local beasties.

No license is available to roadside vend anything on the Scenic Corridor. Even on private property. You must be at least 300 ft. off the S.C.
Roadside vending is much to trashy for the State of South Walton. Anyone that does it should be sent to prison and forced to make big blue "Welcome to the State of South Walton" signs.:D
