Code enforcement had to issue another stop work order to Walton County Commissioner Ro Cuchens for the brown sand dumping in Seagrove Beach. No word yet on whether it will have to be removed or allowed to stay.

Is that the only option? I'm so uneducated (suprised) on this subject...but it seems like they could do something else...what about pumping sand from the ocean?

OMG  . Where is this exactly. Has this been reported? That dune destruction makes my stomach hurt. As we have all said, the order or special sand ordinance is a good one by TDC or the commissioners office but sadly it does not look like there is any agency, group or office in place to review/enforce the rules. :bang: :bang: :bang:

Who's responsible for enforcement (owners or peeps driving by)? It is time for the letters and emails again. Is it time for another emergency meeting? :pissed:

What a jerk this Cuchens guy is! :whack: Now he's messing with my neck of the woods! :pissed: Can't exactly place where this photo was taken. Surely they didn't bulldoze through the dunes!

Hopefully they'll be forced to remove it. Aargh! There needs to be some serious code/law enforcement ....maybe jail time would stop these idiots in their tracks!

The power shovel seen on the top of the bluff was removing the brown dirt from behind the seawall this afternoon. I don't know anymore than that.

In some places they do. Wherever homes have been left unprotected or nearly unprotected there is major construction going on. In many areas the beaches are very narrow which makes it worse. A lot of seawall construction going on.

I wonder what those end-loaders in the back of the photo are doing? Are they scraping? :idontno:

This is really a shame. While I feel for people who have to do something fast to save their homes, there is a larger and longer-term concern for the beaches. This County Commissioner knows better and has a blatant conflict of interest in these matters. I suppose someone will have to contact the District Attorney's office, eventually. We had similar problems with clear cutting of trees and mass grading of our hillsides for hillside vineyard development. Finally, the County had to adopt a policy of offenders going straight from handwritten County employees' notes onto the D.A.'s desk and they had to nail a couple of repeat offenders with civil actions and the stiffest fines that could be imposed. Napa County also nailed contractors who were aiding and abetting these situations, big fines and no work in this County for up to five years. Finally, the situation hit home. But the soft shoe does not work when someone might have to spend some money and when it is apparent that the County will do nothing to stop them.

We accept that having a house so near the Gulf carries a certan increased level of responsibility and fiscal commitment. Otherwise, we'd have a lake house in Wisconsin. Hello???

I hope that they will improve on this. I was down there a few weeks ago, the beach was very pretty, until Rita came thru. We stayed at Walton Dune Homes and could not have asked for a better beach. I hope that it survived Rita, it was almost gone when we left ,but I know that this was mostly storm surge. Would Love to see a picture. Thanks to all of you guys and gals down there, remember, you live in paradise

Hi there!

I am new to this forum. I noticed the horrible brown sand in the pictures. How do you know it is a county commissioner doing that?

It is sad to see our beaches in such disrepair.

Is the act of shooting spitballs at a County Commissioner at a County Commissioner's Meeting considered an assault, legally speaking?

I arrived at 10:30 on Wednesday night headed to the beach walkover at Andalusia St in Seagrove. The beach is now VERY narrow, in some places 10 feet from the end of the walkovers. Yes, there is lots of seawall construction back filled with BROWN sand. I have two questions.

1.) I thought any seawall construction had to be temporary, 60 days only. The pile driver shown in Kurt's photo is pounding in 30 ft metal plates that are corragated and then are rivited to a second high layer. These do NOT seem temporary. The other type of seawall is wood poles pounded in with 1 by 10's screwed in and back filled with brown sand. I'm not sure how much of a waves energy either of these will deflect of absorb, especially the wood ones.

2.) Wouldn't this brown sand would be top filled or dressed with white sand and then sloped on the gulf side down, kind of like a man made dune?

No matter what, the pile driver has not been puonding the last two days. That's a very expensive peice of equipment to be sitting idle so I have to think there is some type of "stop work" order. I'm heading down to the beach here in a few minutes, I'll get some more photos.

Rules for seawalls and other measures - click here (http://www.co.walton.fl.us/citizen_services/Hurricane%20Dennis%20Recovery%20Information%20for% 20beach%20property%20owners.pdf). Some seawalls are permitted to be permanent and some temporary. Temporary structures can be converted to permanent ones with additional permit approval, which must be requested within 60 days.

A vertical seawall of any solid material reflects 100% of a waves energy, until it fails. A less than vertical system (dune), absorbs energy and does not reflect 100%.

A vertical seawall that reflects 100% means that all of the returned energy will take more sand with it, enhancing erosion of the beachfront. There is also an issue of a vertical seawall causing added erosion to adjacent areas.

Seawalls will be covered with sand and vegetation planted in most if not all instances.

It would be considered battery--the act of unwanted or unwelcomed touching. Assault would come into play if it were a foreseen act, if you placed the commissioner in fear of being hit with a spit ball.

So the first spit ball would be battery, and the second one, of which he fears, would be assault and battery?

Yes, both assault and battery, after the second spit ball.

Thank you , it is my dog's nickname. So who are throwing spitballs at? Sounds like fun, messy, but fun.

That is THE sorriest (!) picture I've ever seen of SoWal beaches! And that county wasn't even hit with a hurricane....yet.
But then again, with county leaders like SoWal has, who needs hurricanes.
