By "this part of the world" do you mean Africa or the Middle East?

Or just anywhere one religion/religious leaders have a lot of influence/control? :idontno:

Yeah, it would definitely suck to live somewhere where the church had the power to interfere in schools, outlaw/regulate medical procedures, and dictate lifestyle choices based on their beliefs................oh, wait!

In the West bank et. al. the Muslims are fighting the Jews.

In Lebanon the Muslims are fighting the Christians.

In Northeast Africa the Muslims are fighting the Africans.

In Pakistan/India/Kashmir the Muslims are fighting the Hindus.

In Iraq the Muslims are fighting each other.

Is there a common thread here?

Leaving people alone and living in peace just isn't profitable for some.

Abu Dhabi to Bolster Citigroup With $7.5 Billion Capital Infusion

Citigroup Inc., seeking to restore investor confidence amid massive losses due in credit markets and a lack of permanent leadership, is receiving a $7.5 billion capital infusion from the investment arm of the Abu Dhabi government.

The investment by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority will help rebuild Citigroup's capital levels, which have been eroded by a credit crunch that began in the summer. Citigroup Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Charles Prince resigned earlier this month after the bank, which had already written off billions of dollars, said it was facing as much as $11 billion more in losses.

Bob, I take it that you have strong feelings about this. Hey, you know, they are crazy emeffers as compared to us. We can't relate to people who would commit suicide for their religious beliefs. Heck, most of us don't even go to church on Sunday. There's no way we can "get" their mindset.

It reminds me of the course I taught from the book "Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid." Parts of the book deals with how you can only make decisions based on the set of internal rules that you have. For example, if you are insane, the decisions that you make are based on your own set of rules that are inarguably faulty, but to you, they are logical.

I am not optimistic that we will ever solve the "Middle East Problem." They are coming from such a different set of rules that we don't understand them, and vice versa. I think that GW naīvely dove into this war and didn't realize the vastness of the cultural gap between us. This is a war that we will never win. Even if we nuke the Middle East, there is some crazy (relative to our rules) and smart person out there with enough knowledge derived from the Internet that they can nuke us back.

Disclaimer: politics is not my area of expertise, but I do have expertise in formal language theory which is the abstraction of our personal set of beliefs that guide our thinking, ā la "Gödel, Escher, Bach."

Bob

I strongly disagree with this. What was the big concern? They were going to collapse and the US would have to bail them out? Oh wait the official story at the time was that they were super powerful and just waiting to take us over. They were going to get mad at us and nuke us? of course the church doesn't dictate schools and lifestyle choices. we are a republic and a democracy. as an early aids activist i am extremely thankful to live in a country that paid attention until europe, asia and africa. i recommend you go live in a country with sharia law before you go comparing america's democracy to that. it's TRAGIC how uneducated some people are.

as for suggest we "don't bother with the part of the world" what a silly sentiment. for those of us who have travelled the world and the country we know that "not going there" simply won't protect us. i realize that there aren't any mosques in destin, but clearly you must realize that is not reflective of the rest of the country.

That wasn't an "America bashing fascist view" that was sarcasm, designed to make people realize that such actions (in varying degrees) were not limited to Islamic countries before they jumped on the anti-Islam bandwagon.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/africa/11/26/sudan.bear/index.html why we should never, ever mess with this part of the world

Isolationism and pacifism won't work these days. The radicals in these countries want us and the rest of the west wiped off the face of the planet and the entire world ruled by strict Islamic law.

Leave them totally alone and they will build nuclear weapons, armies and weapons systems with all the oil money. Some of these weapons will eventually end up in the hands of the radical elements and make their way onto our shores and into Europe (Russia and China would be next--the Chinese gov't would not be looked upon with pleasure by radical islamists after they got rid of the west).

A simplistic look at the world through rose colored glasses that says we can all coexist in peace is ridiculous. Please name a lengthy time in history when we were not at war or when there was not a significant threat looming over us. Unfortunately, our species is prone to violence and war due to the need for power. I say we do everything we can to protect our freedom including taking it to the streets in the Middle East where appropriate.

Are you trying to compare some greedy, self centered people trying to get rich off religion with the Islamic radicals? Come on.

There is no comparison between Saddam, OBL, and other islamic fundamentalists and the Christian "leaders" you refer to here. If we were ruled by Islamic law, there would be women killed because they were raped and the rapists would stay in jail for a couple of weeks. School teachers would be threatened with death or killed for allowing their students to name a teddy bear Mohammed. Hands would be cut off for stealing. Girls would not go to school. Women would not drive, vote or be seen in public without full body covering. Etc, etc.

If the conservative Christians totally got control of government, you might have abortion outlawed, an expansion of the death penalty, less government assistance for the poor, etc.

You cannot compare radical islamic leadership to conservative Christian televangelists. Their are varying degrees of evil.
