By John Kennedy |TALLAHASSEE BUREAU
November 25, 2007
TALLAHASSEE - Florida may become the next state to bar drivers younger than 18 from using cell phones behind the wheel, with some legislators saying they're alarmed by teens text-messaging while driving.

Grayt idea! I wouldn't mind if they banned many adults from it too. Some people can't drive in the first place much less in the left lane of the interstate trying to dial a phone number. :bang:They say it's like dui.

We've probably all been guilty of being distracted by something or another while driving an automobile. We've seen young kids absolutely lost in their texting land -- completely unaware of things around them -- can't imagine anyone trying to drive & text .. it sounds like a recipe for disaster. We all must pay more attention while driving -- and set good examples -- seems like we should be able to find way to live without talking on the phone, or looking online or texting or whatever while we are on the road for that limited amount of time each day!

One of my bros companies requires him to pull over for cell calls while travelling. Trips take him an extra long time because business calls keep comin' in he says. At least, he and those around him are safer. I hope they require him to pull all the way off the exit. That's really dangerous just sittin' on the side of the road too. They can have my cell while driving though.

It's against the law to use cell phones while driving in the city of Chicago. Only headsets. I wish they'd do this out in the 'burbs.

I'd be for this, for sure.

They need to bad anything that can't be done hands free. I about got killed twice, yesterday, on my way back to Atlanta...once in DeFuniak by a woman (not a kid) texting while driving and again in Troy by a guy trying to dial in traffic...
Remind me to tell you guys some day about the time I had to kick the driver's side door of a minivan being driven by a woman gabbing on her phone coming over on me on my motorcycle...:pissed:

I think the Congressman who wrote this bill was smoking crack, or just trying to be sneaky. He stated that teens are the ones who need to focus on driving when behind the wheel. I actually see the teens as being more aware than the adults who are fiddling with the radio, busy eating and drinking, putting on makeup, shaving (electric razor), feeding kids, getting the dropped toys or passy for the baby, etc. I have found myself texting and talking on the phone while driving, but I've been trying really hard to not even talk, much less text, on the phone while driving. I think we begin to feel very sure of our driving skills after not crashing when talking or texting, that we think we are really able to multi-task using a huge death machine. If this bill passes, the adult ban will surely follow once the insurance stats prove the massive amounts of money which can be saved by banning the phones by drivers.

When I see someone driving erratically/poorly I know it is either 1) a car of teenagers 2) someone under the influence 3) someone on a cell phone!
It has already been proven that teenagers and folks on phones have much higher accident rates. A teenager on the phone is what I'd call a "double whammy".
I'd be all for banning cell phone use while driving (for everyone) and limiting the rights of teenage drivers.
