Bush Gets First Veto Override

For the first time in Bush's seven-year presidency, the Senate overrode a veto, for a water resources bill that would preserve wetlands. What do you think?

"Well, it's not quite bringing the troops home, but I guess it's at least a fairly pointless expression of the people's will."

"I wouldn't get too cocky, I bet the president can still find a way to screw up those wetlands."

"While this might classify as a check, I don't think it quite balances anything."

The positive note is that conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats totally came together on something! Bravo, lets hope for a repeat performance!

Some of the money was for earmarked Beach renourishment plans, which may have influenced the Fla. senators....

Much of the money is for the Everglades Restoration Project--that's what influenced Republican Mel Martinez to vote against the prez....about time some of the members of Congress did the right thing.

Actually WRDA is an authorization bill with price tags but no check in the mail. Congress will still have to fund the authorized projects to get them built and the USACE backlog of projects with no appropriations is in the billions already. That being said there hasn't been a WRDA since 2000 so it is good to get some of those projects finally authorized and give them a chance to be built. FYI, WRDA is supposed to be passed every 2 years.
