Not that I am a fan of Time magazine, but the August 13 issue has a fairly decent article regarding NO, Katrina and the future. While the article rightfully mostly blasted the Corp of Engineers (Those people give engineers a bad name, but that's another story), there is some hint as to the lousy politics that keeps getting LA and particularly NO in trouble.

They are dead on with the cause of the flooding being the demise of extensive wetlands brought about by the political system.

It makes me wonder if the palce will ever get it and change the way of lie there. They have had on hellova wake up call, buit it is my opinion they just rolled over and went back to sleep.:bang: :bang: :bang:

I am glad I left, but it makes me sad to see a potentially outstanding area being sucked down the drain.

It also floods because it was built below sea level.

Absolutely. and it has pumps with the electric motors at ground level, and levees built on cofee grounds, and poor maintenance and on and on you go.

I have been a contractor with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 20 years. I am very happy to say, that I am proud of the Corps of Engineers and what they do. I am assuming you are an Engineer. Some of those Engineers that you say give Engineers a bad name are very good friends of mine. Just thought I would get THAT off my chest.

Here is a link that provides an excellent education on what should be a national emergency:(

Kathy,

I am, and one of the things that engineers subscribe to (or should) is that the public good over rides private gain. When an engineer is working for an organization that does not abide by this, that engineer has an obligation to either do something about it or leave.

Yes, there are some really good people in the Corps, but the entire orgainzation is controlled by poilitcs and $, not what is in the best interest of the public.

Look at Skuny's link. Who did this? Is in the public good? What options were strongly considered (or did the politicians simply demand)?

Yes, it hurts to be pointed out, but when boondoggles like the ones that took place in NO happen, the facts are there for the public to see.

It hurts me to see the place go to hell in a handbasket like it has, but we also have to stand up and acknowledge who is responsible.

The same issue is facing Sowall with the developers. Keep an eye on this place for the next 50 years or so.

That's my hot button issue right now. If developers continue to be allowed to find loopholes in the land development code to suit their own pocketbooks, it'll be a lot sooner than 50 years.

That's the article. Thanks for the link.

Beachrunner, I guess that is the underlying thread of my rant on NO. We let those people that have a financial interest over run the public interest.

This has got to stop!! I don't know how and if I did, you would certainly hear about it.

Same as this global warming business. Unless we assume that the world as we know it is going to come to an end soon, we better get off our wallets and do something meaningful.

I just finished reading this entire article. So, how do you defend those that pay your salary after reading this? You don't. You just hope that they can learn from their mistakes, and make the improvements that need to be made. I hate what has happened to NO. It is actually my second favorite place to visit after SoWal. I hope and pray that the city will be saved. If not by the Corps, than by gosh by somebody. I am not too blind to realize that it is all political and motivated by $$. However, I just hope that those issues can be put aside and everyone work together for the greater mission of saving New Orleans and the surrounding Parishes.
