As some of you guys know, I've been doing a bit of drawing over the last few months. The photos of some of my work are above. After having many people tell me that I should be selling them, my questions to you are, What would people pay for them, and what would seem like a fair price? The majority of those shown above are already spoken for, but you get the idea. All are simply framed and ready for hanging. They are 11"x14", and there is a mixture of Charcoal, Pencil, and Pencil with Water, and all are on paper. All subjects are of regional interests. One other question is, should I offer them to SoWallers first on the message board. I am not sure that they are fancy enough for most of the big stuff displayed in galleries around here.
Just curious... (please don't try to sugar coat your opinions.)
:idontno:
Nice work S.J.
Local artists here would get any where from $100.00 to $300.00 per piece... if they are custom (done for the person IN the piece) double that .....

Hmmm...such serious questions for a sunny day.;-)
Anyway, my simple answers (for what they are worth)-
Don't have any idea on price- have you browsed a few local galleries and compared prices on pieces similar in medium/size/style? Get some high and low numbers. Or ask artists that are selling.
After you have priced them, have a SoWal sale to test the waters. Do this a few days after the SoWal article hits the Sun, so you have max exposure. You have enough friends and aquaintances to get your sale rolling- people like to buy art from people they know or have art representing places they have visited.
Yes, they are "fancy" enough.
My favorite is the fifth one from the bottom, and if it for sale, can we buy it? I think we need an SJ original to add to my "fancy" permanent collection.....

I recognize a lot of those people! Kelsey is beautiful as always! I love the one of the Seaside chapel! Is it sold yet?
When are you going to do a SoWal collage?! I think we would all buy one of those!!
Who knew you had so many talents SJ? I am still waiting on my scarf....I know you are knitting me one...I saw you doing it Friday night! ;-)

Seaside Chapel is taken, but I plan on doing some more of the Chapel. The drawing of the Chapel was and experiment with some pencils washed with water, and was really fun to do, so I might try some more.
The ones of the sailboats on Hogtown Bayou are the only two which are not spoken for at the moment.
Thus far, I have only been drawing things that speak to my drawing hand, saying, "you have to draw me," but I might be open to taking on some other challenges like special requests. No pets though, their personalities are too difficult to capture. Any ideas for subjects?

There was an artist at the lodge last weekend showing us some of her work. I showed her a pic of the boys together and she said she would charge $250 for a drawing of the picture because it was two subjects.

Jon "Jabo" Stark is the drummer who plays with the Red Bar jazz band and who used to play with James Brown. He would be a visually interesting character, and you could enjoy some good jazz while you're working.

:funn:I am currently working on one with 17 very recognizeable locals gathered together outside of the RedBar, and it is taking me forever to do. (I thought knitting took up a bunch of time. With the drawings, I complete them, let the rest, look at them again, and add or take away a little something, then, judge it again. :bang: With knitting a hat, I tie the final knot and I am done.) Anywho, last night, I was thinking about this drawing which is taking forever, trying to detail all of the people and instruments, and my thought turned into a question, would people pay more for a piece like this rather than one having only one subject? It is not much different from doing 10 individual subject drawings regarding the mental fatigue. In fact, I would rather do 10 individual ones.

That original would cost a lot ($500)! Then you could do numbered prints which would be cheaper. A few years ago, Grayton Kid posed for a photographer and the framed pictures sold for $800 at Seaside. Those were just photographs.

SJ- pricing is one of the hardest things to me. Every painting that I do has an emotional attachment for me. No real words of advice on that one, ask Lisa-at-the-beach maybe:idontno:

Thanks for the advice. I hear you regarding emotional attachment, as I, too, have that connection with each of my drawings, and with everything I knit. The attachment isn't so much with the piece itself, but rather with the energy of that subject, as the piece unfolds. It can be said that a photograph captures time while a drawing captures the mind. -- I think this is equally or more true for the person behind the lense or pencil.
Yeah, scratch what I said about the custom stuff. You are so right and I already knew this. Glad to get some reinforcement on that thought.
