Looks like the jpgs aren't uploading to the server. I used to have that problem with my webcam. I'd have to reboot the computer and restart the software. Sometimes it was a matter of a loss of connectivity.
The camera has a built in server so it doesn't need a computer to run. I think the problem is with the cable modem. Apparently, every time the cable goes out (and Mediacom is notorious for that here) the modem will need to be rebooted. Which means we will be at the mercy of whoever is staying at the house, IF anyone is even staying at the house. Unless someone knows of a way around this I fear we will have long periods where it isn't working. Maybe a newer modem or a different model will reconnect on its own.
This wasn't so much of a problem when we had it running before, because there was a permanent resident living there.
If any permanent residents live gulf front and are willing to let us set up a webcam in their window, please contact me. All we need is a power outlet, and an intenet connection and computer that are always on (or at least during daylight hours).
Alternatively, if there is a second home someone has that I can get a key for, so I can go by and reboot as needed. Obviously if the home is rented that could be a hindrance.

Kurt, we can reboot our Road Runner modems down here by calling Bright House customer service. Maybe Mediacom can do it for you?

Thanks - cable here is primitive and doesn't even cover all of SoWal. I can't imagine customer service would be very good or that they would be advanced enough to be able to reboot a modem remotely. Anyone here have Mediacom service that has heard of anything like this?
Seems like there would be a modem on the market that is self-rebooting though.

We have Sprint in FL and frequently have to do a manual power cycle on our modem. We have Charter in GA and also have to do the same thing. They always try to blame the wireless network, but a power cycle on the modem (with the wireless disconnected to minimize the variables) always fixes it. I don't know of any way this can be done remotely, at least by these service providers.

Mediacom can reboot remotely. They have been trying to resolve a problem at the gallery for about 6wks and do it quiet often.
Just give them a call, wait forever, and then maybe you will have the rare privelege of speaking with someone who knows what they're doing.

It has been too freakin' cold to dance around on the beach. BUT- lucky for you, the weather will be warming up this week. You should see lots of action on the beach cam! Look for me white-knuckling the drive through the soft sand at Grayton (yes I am one of those awful drive on the beach people  ).

I think a wave at sunset from SoWallers would be grayt. When it warms up, can you also have a WeatherCam and send some of your nice weather to us nice northerners? We'll be there ourselves at the end of the month so we'll try to wave in front of the BeachCam.

That is so much funn to do. One day about two years ago I got a phone call from my friend who was in Sorrento, Italy with her husband. She said GET on the computer RIGHT NOW! I did, and there she was waving at me. Way cool.
Another time Merman and I went to Hilton Head without the kids and we called home and had my parents get on the computer, and they and Alex and Fyl saw us waving to them. Come to think of it, that might have been a little mean.

We did just that 20 minutes ago - you have to be keeping your eye peeled.
On the old cam, some were known to have set up a designated time to flash friends back home.

Thanks - probably means the cable is out again. We're going to trade out the modem for a new one in the hopes that a new one will be able to auto negotiate when the cable comes back on. Also looking into DSL.

Speed doesn't matter because all Kurt is doing is ftp'ing a jpg every 30 seconds to a server. Now if he wants live video, that's another story, as I'm sure he knows.
One thing I tried to do was set up a "burglar cam" (as opposed to a beachcam) for security around my house so I could see online what was going on at my house when I'm away. But the whole setup was just too undependable, so I gave up on it. It would run for maybe 24 hours and then either the Internet service would go down, or the software would simply get retarded and I'd need to reboot either the modem or my computer. But I couldn't do that if out of town.
Speaking of streaming, I've been wanting to use a webcam with streaming video and audio so that I could broadcast my classes. That way I could teach from the beach. :) Also, at my suggestion, my employer is looking at ways classes could continue to be held if school were shut down due to some sort of disaster, like a bird flu pandemic. If there were any hint of something like that happening, I'd want to stay at home, teach my classes from there, and have no contact with the outside world.
The last time I talked to my IT guy, he said the best option is to use Windows Media Encoder to push to a server running Windows Media Services. I haven't researched it -- that's his job.

thanks for the input regarding ftp mgt. please feel free to visit my server at: tapers.org

if the local cable ISP is incapable of handling the extemely light load of a .jpg every 30 seconds, i'm still not sure how dsl could.
