In need of a stackable washer/dryer in good condition - just seeing what's out there before I buy a new one.

you might want to touch base with Rapunzel -- I think she had some experience buying a stackable unit!

FYI I still have a dryer in my garage...along with a million other items! If worst comes to worst!

Word to the wise: don't get a standard stackable(they may be called washing centers). Make sure you get a full size washer and dryer that CAN be stacked. I had one of the standard ones to save space and it would take about 5 hours just to dry the clothes (and that was by dividing the wash into VERY tiny loads). :bang: Soooo after just having the washer dryer for one year it broke  (probably because I put 5 items in the washer). It was under warrenty but there was NO way I wanted to have it fixed. End of story ~ we bought a REAL washer dryer and my life is soooo much better. :D You could have had mine for free since it was under warranty but I would have felt guilty giving it to you.

And I'll second that ditto. I bought a used washing center when I first moved here. It developed a leak, and I paid Dixon's to fix it. It was throwing good money after bad. After three months of noise, leaks, mangled sheets, and the aforementioned 5 hour drying time I went and bought a front loading washer and stackable dryer. They are much more energy efficient, so worth the price in the long run.
If you don't do a lot of laundry and don't mind the one piece system, then I'd recommend you go to Caring and Sharing. I hear they almost always have a stack unit available, and if you decide you hate it at least your money went to a good cause.
The all in ones are pretty great, if space is an issue....

There was a "washing center" in our home when we bought it due to the size of the laundry room. I'm not sure of its age, but both components worked fine until a few weeks ago. It was not still under warranty, but Sears told my husband which part to buy to fix the dryer, and it still isn't running properly. I've been looking at the separate stackable washer and dryer and will probably go with one of those, unless we can reconfigure the laundry room to fit a side by side.
Thanks for all the information, though! I will never again take my appliances for granted. I don't like hanging clothes on the line, but it's better than hanging out in a Defuniak Springs laundry mat.
