I say take the kids to Grayton Beach so they can check out the Dune Lake area-it's cool, lots of kids that age playing. It's really cool as sometimes the lake and ocean interchange water and sometimes there's a sand wall the separates the two. Grayton has the Red Bar which has wonderful live music and great food (and a bar) but it's not all about the bar, very family friendly.
Seaside is cool to walk around and check out, lots of shops, candy store, toy store, gelato place. In the summer they have a movie night, music night, plays etc.. probably not during Oct.
Biking on 30 is very fun and there are lots of bike shops to choose from.
I love to eat at Stinky's Fish Camp.
There's a great bakery, it's an Italian Bakery next to an Italian restaurant on PCB on the beach front road, more to the west end from the big high rises. It's fabulous and soooo affordable! Can't think of the name now but it's in my trip report that I did in early June.
